Family History Websites & Links

Recommended Posts

Babybluejojo, posted this recently, and suggested this topic, so challenge has been set, what sites do you use, tell us and help others

Here is a site I have just come across that might interest people. At the moment it is free membership and free to search but will be reverting to an unlimited searches for £1 a year!!!!

It is user led - you input the details of your ancestors from your birth/marriage/death certificates so then others can find it. You can also search for the ones inputted by other people.

There is also an area where you can offer certificates bought in error for sale on there too! So if you have some certificates that don't belong to your tree - why not advertise on there.

So far I have not had any success finding any information for my ancestors on there but as the site grows you never know what you might find. (I get the impression that it has not been running that long so hence why not many results when you are searching at the moment).

The website is as follows http://bmdshare.com/

Happy hunting or inputting everyone!

Maybe we could have a "sticky" that is just useful web links? Could a moderator consider this as a topic thread?

Topic pinned, lets us know the best family history sites to use.

Check out my website A Gaggle of Geese. Although it is dedicated to the Wildgoose family it also contains hundreds of other surnames, many of them in Sheffield.

I don't know if any of you know about the site www.gravestonephotos.com I only found it by chance. It is a new site where they photograph monuments in graveyards and publish the name date and cemetery and you can request a photograph from them. As it is a new site they only have St Johns Chapeltown from this area but my great great grandparents are there and they have e mailed me the photograph.

It is a free site but they are looking to recruit more people to build the site up by sending them more photo's it's good for people who have moved away from the area and there are even some from Australia.

Well worth a look.

Any Italian descendants out there try out www.west bar Italians.co.uk

Thanks for the link Julie-Dawn.

I have used this site several times before while doing reasearch on the Cuneo family and I can verify that it is a useful site not only for Sheffield - Italian family history but also for the history of Italian ice cream companies in Sheffield.

I find that GENUK is a very good source of information. The link is

http://www.genuki.org.uk/

Some of the areas are still a little basic, as information is still being added to what seems to be a MASSIVE and countrywide database.

Some of the areas however are quite detailed, for example, the parish registers for a number of local parishes, eg: St John the Baptist @ Wales, All Hallows @ Harthill, St James @ South Anston, etc are fully searchable online. Links as follows:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Wales/

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Southanston/

You can also link to online free search Phillimore Marriages via UK Geneology Archives. Link below.

Hope that this helps.

Here's a tip to try if you want to use Find My Past. It might work on Ancestry too!

Join the site simply by registering - don't pay anything yet!

You can upload a tree or start one, but until you fork out some cash you can't see any records for them.

All you have to do then is wait, ignore any e-mails sent to you about paying the full fees etc.

If you are lucky they might send you a discount to join, if you wait a few weeks. They did it for me and I got World subscription half price for a year. Full world is over £120, full GB £99. So that was a bargain!!!
