Guest tsavo
I've asked this question before, (but can't find the post) but here goes. Why are none of the thoroughfares in the city centre called roads? We have streets, lanes, places and squares but no roads. Lots of "roads" just outside the centre but not within it. Unless you know different. Simple question.....why? Why are none of the thoroughfares in the city centre called roads? We have streets, lanes, places and squares but no roads. Lots of "roads" just outside the centre but not within it. Unless you know different. Simple question.....why? and which is the nearest Road to Sheffield Town Centre (I use Town implying the question is historical, i.e. Victorian). There are Streets, Lanes, Walks, Gates (Waingate, Fargate), Gutters, Hills, Squares, Crofts, Greens, Foulds, Yards, Rows, Cross(es), Moors, Bridge, Pool, Shambles, Hartshead, Courts, Fields (Alsop Fields), Views, Villas, Wildebeest Boulevards (I may have made that one up), Ways, Bar, Alleys - anyone come up with any others ? Campo Lane Road does not count ! For your SheffieldHistory homework, please name one of each ... ------------------------------------------------ Homework, now there's an idea ... We have streets, lanes, places and squares but no roads. Lots of "roads" just outside the centre but not within it. Unless you know different. Simple question.....why? Interesting. Perhaps wikipedia has part of the answer. The article on 'street' says 'In the middle ages, a road was a way people travelled, with "street" applied specifically to paved ways'. The OED also states that the modern sense of the word 'road' is comparatively recent--the earliest example they give is from 1597. At least for the older street names in the city centre this might explain why they are not called roads. Jeremy

However have a freshly-baked "I provided an answer that even the two people that supposedly know some kind of answer didn't expect" muffin (Tsavo's paying) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Even we only know the nearest Roads and he's forgotten ! Guest Jeremy
two people that supposedly know some kind of answer I didn't even realize that there was an answer! Arbitrarily calling the cathedral the centre, the closest road to the centre that I can think of is Glossop Road. Many of the 'roads' near the centre are routes that lead from the old town to somewhere else and are named after the place that you could reach by travelling that route (Penistone Road, Attercliffe Road)--is that the answer? Jeremy

Guest Jeremy
Old Street, Park is of particular interest to me as it is the first place that I can definitively locate any of my ancestors within the parish of Sheffield. From map 94: The two Mosley/Moseley firms seem to have existed side-by-side for many years. Questions (probably for Richard): Do we know what the pub was in 1787 (John INGOLDSBY, victualler)? I have no answer to the John Ingoldsby question, I don't have him in either the Pubs or the Beerhouses list (I've added him as a Victualler to my list). I fully agree that the Crown and Cushion/Old Crown and Cushion and the Rose and Crown are most likely one and the same place. I have Rose and Crown, Old Street, Park (1822) with Elizabeth Evans this neatly dovetails with the Crown and Cushion details as shown below : Crown and Cushion, 21 Old Street, Park 1818-20 Elizabeth Evans 1822 Elizabeth Evans (Rose and Crown) (added from existing Rose and Crown record) 1825 Abraham Amery (possibly Amory) 8 Old Street, Park 1828 Abraham Ashman/William Ashmore 1829, 1833, 1834 William Ashmore 1837 Edward Brownell 1845, 1846, 1849, 1851, 1852, 1854, 1856 Herbert Urton 1862 James Hartley 1871 George Davies 1881 Thomas Gamwells also T. I have Rose and Crown, Old Street, Park (1822) with Elizabeth Evans I added in data from the 1825 directory. In 1822 there is: Elizabeth EVANS Vict. Rose & Crown Old Street, Park George EVANS Joiner & pump maker 8 Old Street, Park <------- maybe Elizabeth Evans' husband???? Abraham AMORY penknife cutler 8 Old Street, Park In 1825 there is: Abraham AMERY, pen and pocket knife manufacturer, 8, Old street, Park Abraham AMERY, victualler, Crown and Cushion, 8, Old street, Park Assuming that Elizabeth and George Evans are related and that Abraham Amory and Abraham Amery are the same person, this would seem to confirm that the pub name changed between 1822 and 1825.
