MARY WENT TO SCHOOL WITH MY SISTER WHO SAYS SHE USED PUT MARY'S PLAITS INTO INK WELL,WHICH IS JUST THE SORT OF THINGS SHE'D DO.MARY LIVED IN PREFABS ON SCRAITHWOOD ROAD SHIRECLIFFE WHICH WAS IN MIDDLE OF WOODS. MOST FAMOUS OF LATE FOR HER ROLL AS " ROSE" IN "KEEPING UP APPEARENCES". LOVELY WOMAN AND GREAT ACTRESS. HOPEFULLY THERE IS SOMEONE WITH MORE INFO ON MARY OUT THERE.

I KNOW SHE WON A CARROL LEVI'S TALENT COMPETITION ON WIRELESS(PRE TELE TIMES). AND HER FAVOURITE FRIEND WHO SHE KEPT IN TOUCH WITH UNTILL MARY'S UNTIMELY DEATH WAS ROSE HEWITT? ARE YOU OUT THERE ROSE.

I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT MARY WAS NOT ACTUALLY BORN IN SHEFFIELD BUT IN DONNY AS MARY WETTON IN 1936 BUT CAME TO SHEFFIELD VERY YOUNG. HENCE MISUNDERSTANDING. MY APOLIGES.

Graham, am I right thinking Mary was a very talented singer too. Or am I confusing her with someone else?

YOUR SPOT ON ECHO. MARY HAD A LOVELY VOICE AND COULD SING ANYTHING FROM OPERA TO POP. THIS IS WHAT SHE WON THE CARROL LEVIS SHOW WITH.

AS I HAVE CORRECTED IN MY FIRST STATEMENT, ALLTHOUGH NOT BORN HERE, MARY WAS A SHEFFIELDER THROUGH AND THROUGH.

BORN 1936. SHE BEGAN HER ACTING CAREER IN "LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTER", AND WAS IN THE ORIGINAL CAST OF PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AS Mrs GIRA AND IS ON THE OFFICIAL SOUND TRACK BY ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER. SHE WAS ALSO IN TIM RICE'S "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" IN THE WEST END AND HAD JUST FINISHED RECORDING THE OFFICIAL SOUND TRACK FOR THIS WHEN SHE DIED IN BROCKLEY LONDON AGED 62 IN 1998.

Yes, Mary was a very good singer.I have a vinyl Lp record of her in the musical 'Bless The Bride'.Mary was also the youngest girl (at least up to the theatre re-opening in 1990) ever to play Principal Boy in a Lyceum Pantomime when she appeared in 'Babes In The Wood' in the 1953-54 season.Morecambe & Wise were also in the cast.

Just bought some old Lyceum programmes on ebay and guess what - Mary Millar appearing in a 1959 production of 'The Desert Song' as the leading lady - Margot with Bruce Trent as the Red Shadow. This must have made a change from John Hanson who made the part his own in the 50's & 60's and was still doing a tour of it in the 1970's. David Whitifeld also visited the Lyceum in a production of it. Popular show at one time and the film is still shown regularly on TCM.
