Not sure of the date of this shot yet [:genevieve.jpg] Nice collection of parked cars outside and one of them is a mini (so I'm still winning on 3 minis!) The photo sort of looks 70's. Is this the club on the road behind the Moor close to telephone house and the building that Freemans used to work out of?

Taken from the footbridge that has now gone, looking towards Telephone House. The old Freemans building (Milton House) is off the picture to the left. Agree some interesting late 70's cars, bit miffed there is only one Mini

The old Freemans building (Milton House) is off the picture to the left. Agree some interesting late 70's cars, bit miffed there is only one Mini When my wife worked for Freemans in Milton House (1987 - 1994) she did a late shift on Friday night and I had to go and pick her up from work around midnight. Often parked outside Milton House just a bit lower down than the cars in this picture. It was amazing what you saw while waiting, people drunk before they even got in, crossing the road by climbing and jumping over the barrier of the central reservation even though there was an underpass just a bit further up the road, drinking in the street, urinating in the street, fighting in the street. At that time this was totally outrageous behaviour but thanks to a number of TV programmes about binge drinking and wild holidays it now seems quite tame. I can't remember what the nightclub was called at that time though, - it may still have been Genevieves.

Max also had a club called Shades if anyone remembers this ?. As a young lad i remember Max giving me and my dad (who were old mates) a lift home in his Rolls Royce. huthwaite
I could be way off but didn't it used to be the Penny farthing and later Maximillions ? I remember the flashing multi-coloured dance floor ala Saturday night fever! I also remember Shades it was iin the basement of what later became Napoleon's Casino, Mum used to attend regularly and went to see many artistes perform there, I remember my Dad went with her to see Desmond Decker and fell asleep! I think it was called Maximillions later on but there is two clubs at that location (you would get to the other from round the corner) Im pretty sure the Penny farthing was on Eyre st near the old beer keller. They owned another club on Eccelsall Road known as "Shades" in the late 60s and through the 70s. She and her sister used to visit the clubs on saturday afternoons and as we got older i went too. I just put in Shades on the search and it came up with this thread, cos I remember it as a really cool place, it was once the Greystones Cinema, and the club was downstairs. In the mid to late 60´s they used to have "nurses nights" and such like, where people of that trade could get in free. Loads of reggae, ska, etc. It was a buzzing place. I remember having a great time, dancing, hearing the beginnings of reggae and ska at with great people and bands .... :P

Guest theunionlass
I used to go to Genevieve's with my pal when I was 14 (blimey), on Thursday nights because it was free to get in before 9pm. Sounds dead dodgy but it was a blast. We went for the dancing and the bragging at school next day. Her Ma used to come and pick us up at chucking out time (2am) to make sure we got home safe. Loads of students trying to pick us up (we looked a lot older than we were - got the photos to prove it) but we weren't biting. Wasn't there a club round the back of Genevieve's called Mona Lisa's? I used to love an indie night that ran there a few years later, called The WigWam at Mona Lisa's.

Also about 56 mins into the film the lads are in what looks like The Limit and come outside to fight in what seems to be Angel street? Guest cw1972
I know Genevieve (Max's daughter) quite well, used to see her in The Bath Hotel for several years - never knew the club though it was before my time - Max had a lot of ventures, I remember Max's bar (on West Street) was the first bar (not club) that sold alcohol till 1am back in about 2001
Guest Kevin Dinnigan
Hi Everyone.. I use to be one of the Djs at Genevieve's and also upstairs at Mona Lisa's in the mid 70s along with the other Dj at the time Peter? and still in contact on Facebook with the bars manager at the time David Bagshaw.. Great club with many students and nurses during the week, especially students night. Max O'mara was the owner and i cant remember his offsider at the time..The era was when funk music was in vogue and the start of Saturday Night Fever..great times..great music.. Then i moved to the Top Rank Suite/Steely's/Improvisions.. Loved it....Miss it...
