Ancestors is a great site, but I am afraid it is certainly not free, we pay a large yearly subscription to use this site Only the 1881 census index is free and some Scottish records.

There are some good free sites out there

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ - free birth marriage and death records (this site is not comprehensive, but quite good)

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/fra...clear_form=true Free - Has some parish records, not all, and some records are not reliable, but useful as a starting point for further research if taken with a pinch of salt. This site also has the 1881 census.

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ - free site to search directories. Very useful site.

http://sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/ - very useful site for Sheffield records

http://www.sheffieldrecordsonline.org.uk/ - another Sheffield site.
