Guest Jeremy
Norfolk Arms 5 Norfolk Street Open 1825 Closed 1900 Span 75 Comments Earlier 1837 J Lawson 1845 Ann Blake 1846 Hannah Blake 1849 Hannah Blake 1852 Hannah Blake 1854 Mrs Hannah Blake 1862 George Rodgers From 'The songs of Joseph Mather', by Joseph Mather and John Wilson, 1862: Mather, in this song, ascribes the potency of the liquor to its being worked with " Shout-'em-down's" barm. The "Norfolk Arms" public house, at the bottom of Norfolk street, was long called "Shout-'em-down's." It was then the "Owl," and kept by Mr. Michael Waterhoase. It was the rendezvous for several recruiting parties. The "Local Register" says that in 1793 there were thirty recruiting parties in the town. Mr. Waterhouse had been in the army, and seen much service: being an intelligent person his conversation proved almost as attractive as his ale, which must have been as famous as his "barm." Old Mr. Hinchcliffe says that when a lad he often "beat up" for recruits for "Shout-'em-down," who kept " The Hullett" (the Owl.) Mr.Waterhouse afterwards kept a public-house in Cheney square, (New Church street.) edit... RichardB
Pack Horse Inn I was trying to reply to 01743shrops regarding the Pack Horse Inn, but can't find the post to reply to; maybe just one of those things, but I looked long and hard. Pack Horse Inn would have been demolished 1901/1902 as was Hollis Hospital, Three Travellers and Newhall Street. I've chosen just two photos to link to : Hollis Hospital looking towards rear of Three Travellers Inn from Bridge Street (buildings on right front Newhall Street). Demolished 1901 The Three Travellers' Hotel, Newhall Street, also known as Travellers' Inn, from West Bar, Pack Horse Inn, left the positioning of Boots should enable you to get your bearings (bottom of Snig Hill). I've mentioned in a previous posting (yup, that's me lost again) about the boxing that used to take place at the Pack Horse. My grandfather was known to fight there (rooms around the back). RichardB
Pack Horse Inn In this picture the group of men appear to be digging through the rubble produced when Boots and the Three Travellers were pulled down. It shows the Pack Horse lasted longer than the rest of the bottom of Snig Hill. What a magnificent building it was.
