The Campaign for Real Ale's Sheffield branch and Sheffield Civic Trust are both furious work started at the pub on Attercliffe Road, Carbrook, before planning permission had been granted. A complaint was made to Sheffield Council at work at the former Pheasant Inn, known more recently as The Stumble Inn, but the interior had already been removed, along with bay windows and tiles from the exterior. Andrew Cullen, chairman of Sheffield CAMRA, said: "The pub closed at the beginning of the year and was empty - then suddenly work started. "We were trying to get it listed because it is one of few remaining examples of an early 20th century pub which had not had many alterations. "It is a heritage pub which had some classic features. It's such a shame." English Heritage confirmed it had received a request to list the building but had not yet made a decision. But Sheffield Civic Trust chairman Simon Gedye said: "I don't see the point now because what was valuable has been destroyed. "It was one of the most important pub interiors in the city and I think what's happened has been disastrous." Barrie Pepper, a West Yorkshire-based author who wrote about The Pheasant in a book called 'Inns of Character' for the pub's former owner Tetley, said: "It was a beautiful pub and I was shocked when I heard what has happened through CAMRA." In his book, published in 1987, Barrie wrote: "The Pheasant is another example of the excellent pubs built by the former Duncan Gilmour Brewery. "The remarkable thing is it has survived the devastation in the area with the run down of the steel industry. "It has an impressive tile front and the whole house is resplendent with etched glass. There is a fine central hall with handsome doors leading to three public rooms. "One to savour is the purpose-built snooker room, a rarity these days. There is stepped-up seating, which retains its original leather. All the rooms are interesting in different ways." Barrie recalled there was even a sink in the corner of the snooker room to allow men who had come in from the steel works to clean their hands before playing. A Sheffield Council spokesman said: "We were alerted to unauthorised exterior works some time ago and planning enforcement and a planning officer went out to tell them what works they could and could not do without planning permission. "Our enforcement team are keeping a regular check on exactly what they are doing on site. The building is not listed so interior works do not require permission as it stands currently." Doncaster-based Vigo Group, which owns the building, said it plans to create a restaurant on the ground and offices accommodation on the first floor in a £250,000 scheme. Sheffield Council is due to decide on the planning application in the coming month. Vigo director Tariq Shah said: "A condition of the sale of the pub by the brewery was that it must not be used as a pub in future. "We met with English Heritage at the outset and were told that no parts of the building would be considered for listing. "We have also worked closely with local planning officers to create a useful future for the building while retaining a character sympathetic with its environs. The original name plate - The Pheasant - is being retained. "We feel this is a very reasonable alternative to letting the building deteriorate as a poorly-performing pub." 31/01/
