Guest Cazzie
My mother used to tell tales of the Mooney Gang. How they terrorised the Walkley area when she was a girl (1920's) I think they were used to scare the kids into behaving :)
Guest Ndavid957
My great aunt Sarah nee Rigney was married to George Mooney, his first wife. He beat her regulary, and was not a nice man to her. Lets not glamourise thugs and wife beaters. She died of kidney faluire, at a young age, no life for a woman in those days.

DaveH
Ooops ! Sorry, you are correct Dave, got my days mixed up. I don't have Sky or Virgin (cable) TV, only freeview. You seem to have a Virgin Media (previously blueyonder, and before that, TeleWest) email address Steve, like me, so I thought you would have Virgin Cable TV as well. We currently have all 4 of their services, Cable TV / Broadband fibre optic Internet / Landline telephone / Virgin Mobile mobile phone. Anyway, my Virgin Media digibox is set to record the Gangs of Britain on Virgin 237 (CI, stands for crime investigations) TOMORROW night at 21:00. Ponytail
Members of the Mooney Gang (a well-known 'tossing ring' gang from the Park and West Bar areas), c. 1925. t07875 The man crouching is Harry Rippon; the one the right in the trilby hat is Tommy Rippon; in the braces is George 'Ganner' Wheywell. The man leaning on the fence is unknown. Tommy Rippon and George Wheywell were named as members of the Mooney Gang in the book. 'Sheffield Gang Wars' by J P Bean. Harry Rippon is also mentioned in the book. George Wheywell changed his allegiances from the Park Brigade gang to the Mooney Gang in 1925 so the photograph was taken in or after that year. In 1925 Wheywell was around 27, Harry Rippon 33 and Tommy Rippon 36 years old. Harry Rippon died in 1942 aged 52.
