RichardB
If you squint, and have the "True Faith" of a Pub-hunter you can make out the Golden Ball on this photo, at the right hand side. It appears to have a Church tower, but that is just St James trying to hide ! Picture taken circa 1895. The tall gable end (Centre) is part of the Burns Public House. The buildings lower down the hill on the left were part of The Crofts, demolished 1898. Townhead Street flats replaced these buildings; the rents were high for the people that used to live here (3/- to 6/- per week) - the very young, Do we have young here ? - better ask how much that is in modern money !!! http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/pi...ff.refno=y00595 Interior of the pub (1937-ish), left Tom Ward (Barman), right Mr T. RichardB
Neddy, does any of this thread make any sense to you, at all ? To me, it's 14 Pubs at various addresses all with the same name, actual Street address adjusted to suit< I was just pleased to pick one out on an old photo. Seem to remember one in the 70's, modern, 'orrible... Still confused !

Seem to remember one in the 70's, modern, 'orrible... Still confused ! I've been following the Hitchen family, and everything about them has been a struggle there were only a few in Sheffield and most were missed off census, they are on the wife's side I think the address thing for 6 Townhead --10 Townhead may have come about from the widening of Campo Lane, to add to the confusion is the Golden ball having an address on Campo Lane, and Townhead Street, corner plot, looks like the enumerator took the pub residents and forgot the living quarters next door Even the address for 1872-3 ELECTORAL ROLL THOMAS HITCHEN 69 CAMPO LANE is missing from census as another aside Thomas Hitchen took the Grey Horse when the address was Blast Lane, later Stoke Street Then from information from andyc on this site moved back to 26 Campo Lane, THE BALL and you think you are confused. lol

Guest twelvestocks
From Directory & Topography of Sheffield, 1862 Shaw Joshua, vict., Burns Tavern, 10, Townhead Street. Are the Burns Tavern and the Golden Ball one and the same? Joshua was my Great, Great, Great Grandfather, interestingly on all census returns, he puts himself down as a cutler and not an inn keeper. His daughter Mary Ann Atkin went on to keep the Victoria Inn on St.Philips Road and his son William kept the Rawsons Arms Hotel on Tenter Street and another 653-657 London Road.
