POPPYCHRISTINA
Hi Poppychristine, to upload a picture: Select Reply from the previous posting, Type in your message as normal. Select Procure and select the picture from your computer. When this is completed press Upload. Any problems, PM me. If the building you're talking about has a Pagoda roof, it is indeed the Landsdown, Lacarno etc. This is a photo of a building on London Road which has the look of a cinema as it has a sloping roof , front to back . Any ideas on its name

Where exacly is the building shown? Sorry to ask but I'm a bit too far away to take a look! It is above the Tramway pub and opposite The Old Crown Pub. It definitely has a sloping roof like a cinema. My life seems to centre around pubs so I might make a visit and ask if any of the locals know what it is. Guest billsaville
There was one called The Don somewhere on Shalesmoor near West Bars. It became a clothing warehouse not long after the war and folk used to pay a chap (my mother paid a tanner a week to a Mr Brown) and at Whitsuntide we went to the old Don cinema to get our new clothes. Added to main list 7.6.08, thanks.

Bayleaf
I'm looking for info/pics of The Don cinema - west bar A bit pedantic, but the Sunbeam was on Barnsley Road, not Page Hall. And right next door was the Sunbeam chippie, as I recall. And the Roxy was the cinema on Idsworth Rd, not Page Hall. Both my locals when I was a kid! Listing corrected. thank you. Guest tsavo
The Don Picture Palace, was opened in 1912. It originally had seating for 950 patrons, but this was increased by the addition of a balcony 1n 1914, providing an extra 350 seats. The seats themselves were considered very smart being covered in red plush. Cheaper seating in the form of wooden benches was also provided but these patrons had to use a separate side entrance. Also added in 1914 were a Cafe and Grll Room. The cinema introduced sound films in 1930. The frontage was partially faced wth orange tinted terracotta, a similar colour to the Insurance Offices on St Paul's Parade. From the bottom of Snig Hill, the Don was about two thirds along towards West Bar on the left hand side. Info. from Sheffield Cinemas by Clifford Shaw. Guest twamoran
I'm looking for info/pics of The Don cinema - west bar I'm a bit young to remember the Don Picture Palace (or most of the other old Sheffield cinemas come to that - I remember vaguely going to the ABC in the early '80s when I was about 6) but after seeing an old photo of West Bar Green with what I assumed to be the Don (next to the old pub that has now just been turned into a recruitment consultants) I decided to pop down and have a look. If it is where I think it is, it is right opposite to the new law courts. It appears the building is still there (it certainly looks like an old cinema from the side, brick construction with pitched roof and detailing similar to that of the old Landsdowne). By the looks of it, it is now a self storage unit or warehouse of some sort (stupidly I forgot to note the name of the current occupier) and the facade is covered by a pretty ugly prefab metal cladding, painted yellow and blue. Also, the left side has an ugly '60s/'70s building attached to it, hiding it even more. When I went up to the building, you can see the ornate old stonework below and behind the prefab, suggesting that the old facade is still in existence beneath the cladding (dilapidated, but still in existence). From what I've seen, an ornate stone facade and mainly brick used for the main shell of the building are typical of these old cinemas?? If it was Grade 2 listed, however, would they be allowed to put the cladding on? I don't want to get anyone's hopes up if this indeed proves not the be the old Don cinema, but if it is then I hope the externals will be saved and restored to their former glory, especially since Sheffield has lost most of it's old city center cinemas, replaced by some of the worst examples of architecture the city has seen! Does anyone know if this is the Don? And if so, is it likely to be saved and restored (outside anyway) as part of the West Bar redevelopment? Guest tsavo
You are right, Twamoran, thats the old Don you're describing. Don't have any idea as to whether the building is or was ever listed though. Maybe someone knows about this and any future re-developments. Welcome to Sheffield History. Laurence
Guest JackD
The Weston (ranch house/ bug hut) in St Phillips rd had the smallest upstairs ever, three steps if i remember right. We called the "orange box" but could'nt afford it. Jack.

Maybe someone knows about this and any future re-developments. Welcome to Sheffield History. Laurence Thanks a lot Laurence! Glad to hear that is indeed the building, since it's an important bit of Sheffield history and representative of a specific era of life in Sheffield. It'll be interesting to see what they do with it, especially with the upcoming development of the West Bar area. I suspect in this day and age there's little likelihood of such a building being used for its original purpose, but it would be nice if it could be saved and integrated into the redevelopment as something more dynamic than a storage warehouse! I drove past again the other day and its called Armadillo Storage. Here's the website (although I suspect it won't lead to any info on the old Don!): http://www.personalstorage.uk.com/stores/s...d-west-bar.html Cheers, Tom

Guest tsavo
How many do we have on the latest list please ? The reason I'm asking is I have a list of 87 places where film was shown, many for very short periods, I can scan the list, but not till Monday .... A bit late replying to this but would love to see the listing you have. A quick check shows current list has 65 entries.

DaveH
Thought this ad from the Sheffield Star might fit into the list section as it covers more than one cinema including the CINECENTA ' in Pond Street?. Added to main List 7.6.08 Yes the CineCenta in Pond Street, and just look again at that ad at what they are showing, all those X and 18 rated films. The walkway above Pond Street which went to this cinema seemed to be full of dirty old men in plastic macs (even when it wasn't raining) and assorted perverts wandering about outside their doors, not the sort of place you would want to be. My picture shows it early in the day when it was safe for old women to walk up there alone.
HughW
Scala Cinema - Junction of Western Bank and Winter St. It is only a matter of yards but this cinema was on the corner of Brook Hill and Winter Street rather than Western Bank (Western Bank began the other side of the junction). The linked image is not a very good one, only showing one corner of the back of the building. This is a better one. Hugh
