RichardB
http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/leeds/news/ART48015.html Extract : The Victorians were great inventors, and their progress in the field of sewage disposal was not one of their least achievements. Thomas Crapper is famed for popularising the flush lavatory in the 19th century, but not many examples of his early ‘work’ survive. A grinding workshop at the site. Courtesy University of Sheffield/ARCUS So archaeologists from the University of Sheffield got quite excited when they found a toilet dating back around 150 years in an old cutlery and grinding works, believing it to be an original Crapper. Further research revealed that the design of this particular Bramah pan closet toilet was a little more unusual, not a Crapper, but definitely a high class throne that would have been used by the company directors. The archaeology team have spent the last two years surveying, investigating and unravelling the history of the Grade II* listed Butcher Works in Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter, prior to its redevelopment. syrup
Hi Fellow SHs Found this item in refference to Butchers Works from 2004. http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/?pgid=39515&fs=n BUILDINGS OF SPECIAL ARCHITECTURAL OR HISTORIC INTEREST The Group considered the following applications for planning permission for development affecting buildings of special architectural or historic interest and made the observations stated:- (a) Alterations to building to form 55 apartments and seven workshop/ office/retail/café units at ground floor, demolition of three courtyard extensions and wall and erection of 4/5 storey offices (List No.04/03451/LBC and 04/03450/FUL) at Butcher Works, 72 Arundel Street, 41 Eyre Lane and 30 Brown Lane (Listed Building Grade II*). The Group gave a cautious welcome to the scheme but felt that substantial details had not yet been resolved. The Group expressed no objection in principle to conversion of he property to residential use and to the proposed demolitions within the courtyard of the Works, subject to great care being taken in the treatment of existing openings, the elevations behind the proposed demolitions, the new entrance and staircase at Brown Street, the insertion of a new staircase which should be of a curvilinear rather than rectilinear design, the existing windows being repaired if possible and if it is not possible, exact replicas being inserted, the retention of existing metal columns and the grinding troughs now mentioned and consideration being given to the restoration of the wooden hulls of the troughs. The Group recommended that a conservation architect be appointed for the scheme for this key listed industrial building at a key location within the Cultural Industry Quarter.
