Bayleaf
The collection of pieces from the Clarion Ramblers Handbooks has some nice stories about toll keepers. There's a story I like about two men in a carriage and pair who ran through the bar at Owler Bar without paying. Unfortunately the keeper's son was there, who also happened to be a runner with the harriers, and he followed the carriage all the way to a livery yard in Eldon Street and arrived just as the horses were being removed from the shafts! He must have been fit! The end of the story was the men were prosecuted, and the man from whom they'd hired the carriage also made them pay because they'd hired the carriage to go to Gridneford and back and in fact had been to Monsal Dale!
