Wasn't Denby Street somewhere in that location?  I remember meeting some mates in a pub on Denby Street on the way to the Lane in the early 60s.

That pub would have been The Spotsman

Diagonally up and across from there was Denby Street Nursery - our son went there for a short time about 1972/3

Bit earlier than your son's time at the Nursery.

A few further photos, looking down Boston Street towards the church, No. 2 Works of Matthias Spencer & Sons Ltd. on the right, also fronting onto Arley Street. Further along Arley Street (between John & Denby Streets) the main offices & works of Matthias Spencer & Sons Ltd.

Is it possible that the H.L. Nowlin & Sons surgical instrument premises, shown as earlier photo, on corner of Boston Street and Arley Street replaced the Angler's Rest pub around 1939, as the pub was about to be demolished?

Also does anyone know where on Arley Street was that photo of TC Harrison's commercial vehicle yard, between which streets and on which side of the road?

Between Boston Street and Sheldon Street, on the west side of Arley Street, I have maked the area on a section of  this 1953 OS map ...

Thanks. Fascinating. The TC Harrison company ended up with much property in this area; the old Brunswick Steel Works in Denby Street in the 50s and old Matthias Spencer buildings in Arley Street in the 80s. As a matter of interest, where can one access 1:1,250 OS maps like that from 1953, as I can't find them in National Library of Scotland. Richard

Hello, most areas are covered by the 1950's OS maps on this site

My 5x great grandfather Thomas Cadman sold his pub the Red Lion in Elton Derbyshire and moved to Sheffield with his son Joseph and family to live on Sheldon Street where died in 1837.

4 x great grandfather Joseph Cadman ran a carting business from his home on Sheldon Street, this newspaper article about the theft of a cart from his premises on Sheldon Street is from the 1842 Sheffield & Rotherham Independent.

After Josephs death in 1857 his widow Ann Cadman married George Swindon in 1860, the Sheffield Water Works Inspector,  who gave warning the Dale Dyke dam at Bradfield was about to burst 160 years ago today the 11th March 1864.

Thanks for map link. Very useful. Also thanks for 1957 directory pages for Arley Street, Denby Street, Boston Street zone. Very interesting to confirm that Matthias Spencer & Sons, Wardrobe & Smith, William Cornthwaite & Sons and John Vessey & Sons all still present at that time. All had been crucible steel manufacturers, though that must have been about the last year that steel was made. The John Vessey & Sons Brunswick Steel Works site was sold to TC Harrisons that year and Wardrobe & Smith and Cornthwaites were just dormant companies by then, with all then based with Matthias Spencer & Sons specialising in mining equipment (as all those companies were part of the same holding company). Fascinating period.............
