Ponytail
Mower and Pearson, brewers and wine & spirit merchants, Scotland Street. Mower & Co. appear to have started out at 49 Scotland Street as wine and spirit merchants; 1852 recorded as brewers. It appears Henry William Pearson may have been an accountant before going into partnership with Mower to become Mower & Pearson. 1857 Directory reveals they were victuallers, wine & spirit merchants and No. 49 Scotland Street was named "Farm Yard." Premises at Pea Croft were being used as a brewery. The Flood of 1864 affected their business, losing the Inn at Malin Bridge and Casks and Bottles they had "lent" out, for which they put in claims for. Nathaniel James Fewsdale Mower died aged 61 1875. Robson's Directory 1839 Mower & Co., wholesale and retail wine & spirit merchants, 49 Scotland Street. Pigot's Directory 1841 Mower (& Co) wine and spirit dealers, 49 Scotland Street Whites Directory 1849 Mower, Nathl Jas Fewsdale, wine and spirit merchant, 49 Scotland Street. Whites Directory 1852 Mower, James and Co., brewers and wine and spirit merchants, 49 Scotland Street, h. 160 Solly Street. Pearson, Henry William, accountant. and collector, 18 Bank Street, h. Hanover. (Is this Henry William Pearson later of Mower & Pearson) Kelly's Directory 1854 Mower & Pearson, ale & porter brewers, wine & spirit merchant merchants, 49 Scotland Street. Whites Directory 1857 Mower & Pearson, vict & wine & spirit merchants, Farm Yard, 49 Scotland Street and brewers 48 Pea Croft. Mower, Jas., brewer & etc., h Upperthorpe. Mower, Nath, Jas, Fuesdale. h. 30 Upperthorpe. Pearson, Hy Wm, brewer & etc., 49 Scotland Street. Whites Directory 1862 Mower & Pearson, brewer and wine merchant, 49 Scotland Street & Pea Croft. Mower, James, brewer and spirit merchant (Mower & Pearson) h. Upperthorpe. Pearson & Favell, wine and spirit merchant, 10 East Parade. (wondered if this Pearson was related) Pearson, Henry Wm, wine and spirit merchant (Mower and Pearson) h. Crosspool. Nathaniel James Fewsdale Mower died 1875 aged 61 Whites Directory 1879 Mower & Pearson, brewers, wine and spirit merchants, 56 Pea Croft and 61 & 63 Scotland Street Mower's partner, Pearson isn't listed separately in the Aphabetical list, quite possible he could have either died or living out of Sheffield. William Burgoyne Fernell who used to be in a partnership with Frederick Hunt at the Albion Brewery is listed as: Fernell, William Burgoyne, brewer, (Mower & Hunt), Scotland Street, h. Oaklands, Broomhall Place Hunt, Frederick, Broomhall, 8 Broomhall Road Hunt, George Herbert, brewery manager, 3 Summerville Terrace, Whitehouse Lane Speculating, Frederick Hunt retired, dissolved the partnership or went out of business. William Burgoyne Fernell appears to have taken over at Scotland Street. No indication which Brewery George Herbert Hunt was manager of but (this is purely my thoughts) could have stayed behind at the Albion Brewery under the new owner or quite possible it could be at Scotland Street. On the map of 1889, Scotland Street Brewery with an entrance from Pea Croft and The Farm Yard, shown as Farm Yard Vaults, Scotland Street back onto one another. See map about halfway down on the right hand side. https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;q00060&pos=1&action=zoom&id=148323 Link to Breweries post: https://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/11574-breweries-a-z/?do=findComment&comment=92664
