I’ve just been looking through the 1787 Directory of Sheffield and the following streets, crofts and lanes were all mentioned but I don’t know just where they were, can anyone shed some light on the following:

Bailey Field.

Blind Lane.

Isle.

Longstone Lane.

Gregory Row.

Brickyard.

Colston Croft.

Grindle Gate ( Scotland Street area ? )

Ratten Row  ( I’m sure this was somewhere near Broad Lane )

There is a photograph on Picture Sheffield of a horse and cart on Grindle Gate. It appears to have been both the lower end of Scotland Street and also a lane from Scotland Street to West Bar Green. See also information on page 5 of Street Names Central Sheffield published by Libraries, Archives and Information. Sorry couldn't work out how to do the link.

There is a Fairbanks Map of property on the west side of Blind Lane,  bounded by West Street,  Carver Lane and West Street Lane. See Picture Sheffield arc03180

Gregory Row must have been in the vicinity of the Workhouse in West Bar built 1722. "in 1746 two female inmates were caught stealing a sheet and other linen and taking it over a wall to a receiver at the "White Horse"  public house in Gregory Row.  For this crime, they were put for punishment in the "Black Hole" an underground room without any light and afterwards whipped. Ratten Row. "The lower part of Townhead Street,  running down to Broad Lane,  was,  in the middle of the 18th C,  known as Well Gate.  Here surplus water from the neighbourhood flowed down to a pond,  which is mentioned in records as having been cleaned in 1746. At the bottom of Well Gate a narrow lane curved round towards West Bar Green.  This was known as Ratten Row and was described as a nest of filth and iniquity. This lane was swept away during town improvements in the late 19th C. " see page 46" A Popular History of Sheffield" by J Edward Vickers.

The nearest reference to Colston Croft I can find is Colson Crofts on a Fairbanks Map dated 1771, an area of cultivated land situated between Kelham Wheel and Town Mill covering an area from the River Don to Spring Croft later became Spring Street. There is Coulston Street running from bottom of Snig Hill to Bridge Street.

That's brilliant Neddy, the comprehensive list is a good referral for anyone researching family history. Assuming Bailey Field was in the area of Bailey Street and Bailey Lane that just leaves Longstone Lane to identify.

From that 1787 Directory, I thought one of these would give a clue, but I have had no luck so far :-

Kirkby and Borwick  (Pen and pocket knife in general manufacturers)  Longstone-lane.

Cadman David,    Cutler (razors), Longstone-lane.

Drake Thomas,  Whitesmith,  Longstone-lane.

Wolstenholme T.  carpenter & joiner,  Longstone-lane.

Leader's "Sheffield in the Eighteenth Century" published in 1901 says:

The old Directories contain not a few names which have hopelessley disappeared. Where, for instance, was Saint Pavers, or Longstone Lane?

I would assume Saint Pavers was a misspelling of Sands Paviours (Sans Paviours) which ran from Orchard Lane to Bow Street and was demolished to make way for Central School. See Picture Sheffield. s19519.  According to Leader, "a little court of houses may have derived from Samuel Sands who flourished in the reign of Queen Ann."

I wonder if Longstone Lane is also misspelling.... unless of course someone knows otherwise.

Just a thought: "Sans Paviours" might mean "without paving [slabs]" in French.  Would this have been a court where the yard was simple earth or ashes?

Yes, that's the other possibility for the derivation of Sans Paviours.
