From the image above, Kings did used to be the Rock Tavern. Seems too small inside to have been a pub.

Now don’t quote me on this but I seem to remember that it was sold for what seemed an astronomical sum for the time of just over £30,000 , perhaps someone can verify this but it was Kings who bought it.

I thought the scales were part of the Rag n Tag Market., or as the photographs refer to it... Sheaf Open Air Market, used to walk by them on the way to the fabric stalls and have recollections of a rather large lady who operated them, but there again it's a long time ago.

Appreciate its an Artists Impression of Norfolk Market Hall and area but it looks classy especially with the fountain. 

Erected by Henry Charles, 13th Duke of Norfolk, on the site of the late Tontine Inn. Opened Christmas Eve, 1851. Constructed of brick, with stone basement, quoins and dressings, in classic style. The west front was rebuilt 1904-5 with shops opening on to the Haymarket (the other end)  Demolished 1959.

Norfolk Market Hall was built on the footprint of the Tontine Inn, the Coaching Inn (shown on the map arc04183) It suffered a down turn in fortunes when the Railway took away its business.

Taken from Sheffield Illustrated, Vol. 2, page 40. Built 1785 and probably the largest public house in Sheffield at the time. with 12,000 sq foot of banqueting hall on the 2nd floor. It had stabling for 60 horses and its own brewery; cottages for the footmern were built behind the Hotel. It was one of the three main coach departure centres for routes all over England; the others were:The Angel, Snig Hill and The Kings Head, Change Alley. This is the best image I can find of the Tontine Commercial Hotel. A search of the Directories would be needed to determine how long it was in existence. Just my opinion but probably named in homage to the old Tontine Coaching Inn.

Well tried... Have a vague memory it did have yellow and orange tiles. Not that I ever went in but passed by on the way to Rag n Tag Market.

As I look at all the photos of a bustling shopping street in Town , it makes me realise just how much we  have lost in the name of modernisation!….Somehow ,all the supermarkets ,Meadowhall and Crystal Peaks are a poor replacement…….but warmer in Winter!

Great photograph but like many images on Picture Sheffield this is wrongly titled.  It is actually Broad Street with the Rag an' Tag, (old Sheaf Market) on the right. Dixon Lane ended at the Norfolk Arms.
