Fiddlestick
Anyone know where he was born in Sheffield? Rumour had it that, when young, he lived at the junction of Carwood Road and Petre Street . Other names from that corner yard were Harry Lillis who ran a mobile shop in an old Bedford coach and Billy Limbs butcher's shop.

Fiddlestick
Thanks Edmund. Can't quite make the birthplace out. It looks like "Jamaica. Kingston Resident." So the same neighbourhood ( Carwood Rd. Canada St. Kingston St. Jamaica St., all running into Petre St. ). I've had this trouble with other certificates where the handwriting is often illegible. Fiddlestick
Most people would make that assumption Hilldweller, it's a very odd residence entry. Thanks also Neddy, so him living on Petre Street wasn't just a rumour. Only saw him the once compering a great show around the early 80's at Blackpool's Grand theatre.
Athy
Not the same one. Ben Warriss the comedian was born in 1909 (if he had been born in 1881, he would have been 100 by the time that Mr. Stick saw him on stage! Note also the different spelling of the two men's surnames. Voldy
Clearly the Benjamin Warris in neddy's post is the same male as appears in Edmund's Census return post (1911 Census), namely Ben Holden D Warriss's father.(Not given his full name on that document, just 'Ben' age 1yr.) The 'D' being Driver his mother's maiden name. The earlier thread in this section (page 2) of the Forum about Jewel and Warriss started by Old Canny Street Kid in Feb 2009 has first hand information. Athy
Good sleuthing, Voldy. I wonder why Ben changed the spelling of his surname by adding an extra "s", as he appears to have done.
Voldy
Looking at some more entries on Family Search which seem to favour the double 's' spelling, though it could be down to a transcription error often found in this type of record. Ben's father used the double 's' when he signed the Census Form in 1911 at Fulmer Road ( Hunters Bar area). In 1901, before marriage in 1904, he was still living in Petre Street age 20 working as a Commercial Clerk so would have been known by many of the Pitsmoor/Grimesthorpe residents. That reference to 'Grandson' was by the Head of Household Sarah Popplewell (born 1828), her daughter Sarah E married a William J Warris and all (including Ben's father) were resident in both 1891 &1901 Census records at Petre Street. Guest warrier
There is a double s (ss) at the end of Warriss. I am a distant cousin of Ben Warriss.

I understand that Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warriss- who were cousins- were born in the same house (at different times) on Andover Street, Pitsmoor. I lived on Petre Street as a kid and thought the Warriss' who lived at the bottom of Carwood Road, (they had two boys Neil and Wayne) that the dad was Ben's brother. Athy
It would have been extraordinary If they had been born in the same house at exactly the same time!
