duckweed
Does anyone know anything about William White? I know that he had a house in Collegiate Crescent at one time but addresses given for the company are at various addresses including Wicker Library, Fargate and 2 addresses in Bank Street. 10 Bank Street and then 18 & 20 Bank Street. I also know he worked with Leader on the gazettes some of the time. Whites Trade directories when they came out must have been ground-breaking at the time. Anyone have any stories about the man behind the directories?
RichardB
Born 1799, don't know where. Worked for Edward Baines initially (1820's) Book, print and music seller, stationer and publisher of county Gazetteers and Directories, 1 Wicker (White's 1833) Stationer and book, print, map and music seller, 69 Fargate (1837) Publisher of County and Local Directories, 210 Brook View, Broad Lane (1841) - also on list as "Brook Hill" Proprietor of Sheffield and other Directories, Brook Hill (Slaters 1846) Publisher of County Histories, maps and plans, plane globes (?) + publisher Collegiate Crescent, Broomhall (Whites 1852) Publisher of ... 34 Collegiate Crescent (Francis White Directory 1857) Known at 34 Collegiate Crescent 1855-1864/5; 1861 Census shows him at Collegiate Crescent. Died 3rd or 7th September 1868, aged 69 - is it possible he died on the 3rd and was buried on the 7th ? Tells us nothing about the man, but it is a start. I don't have any reference to him on Bank Street, not to say he wasn't there, update requested, if possible.

duckweed
Looks like judging by the date for 18-20 Bank Street that Leader took over William White and continued to publish the guides under that name.
