bczel01
Hi. Maybe I am being daft, but have looked at the Roll of Honour for Sheffield and my ancestor isn't listed? Is this common? He is commemorated on GPO memorial, which I think is in Castle House, and buried in France. He was born in Sheffield and worked in Sheffield, so you would think he would be included. Any ideas? Chris.
HughW
The Sheffield Roll of honour, like local memorials and rolls, as well as the CWGC list itself, must have been compiled from multiple sources of information and it is not surprising that there were errors and omissions. One of the war graves in Walkley Cemetery was only recognized and marked within the last 10 years. In that case the soldier had left the service and returned home, but died later as a result of his service. There must be other cases where names were mis-spelled or relatives who lived at a distance decided to commemorate a casualty nearby. Simple human error is also likely. Stuart0742
See this link http://www.sheffieldsoldierww1.co.uk/Memorial/PO_Workers.html As Hugh says down to human error, the Sheffield Roll was compiled in the early 1920's and has a lot of omissions and errors, Have you checked our entry on http://www.sheffieldsoldierww1.co.uk/ List of all men on the Sheffield Postal Workers Roll of Honour If you can provide more information I will update our record
bczel01
Thanks guys for the comments and advice. My guy is on the Sheffield Soldier website (passed my info to Dean a while ago). This was just looking at a transcript of the 'official' roll, which is on the Sheffield Archives website. Wonder if I could have it amended (haha)?!
