Guest HRHartley
Ok, a long shot here but My Aunt Annie Cotterill was sent to the Cammell Laird munitions factory in Nottingham, and worked as a Nurse there in ww1. Would love to learn more about this obviously, and would love to see her name on some kind of old employee/service list from back then! I am already trying to see if Sheffield Library has such an item as it was a Sheffield company originally I was told. Plus Mr Cammell was apparenyl from Ashopton area too if I have been told right. Did anyone elses family do the same thing in the war?
peterwarr
Cammell Laird's factory in Nottingham was newly built as one of the government's 200+ "national factories". National factories employed a high proportion of women, and were required to make welfare provisions more elaborate than was usual at the time. Separate national factories in Sheffield were operated by Firths and Hadfields. Sorry I don't know anything about Annie. No lists of staff in the Sheffield's national factories are now available, and that may be the case in Nottingham.
