rasp
Does anyone know what was originally built on the site of The Bowery Bar, corner of Devonshire and Fitzwilliam streets?

Edmund
A couple of suggestions; 1849 - Townsend Plumber: Faber and Townsend were recorded in the 1841 Rodgers and the 1846 Slaters Directories as being at 195 Glossop Road - maybe it stretched as far as the end of Devonshire street? 1854 - Mr Brodie's Schoolroom, had moved from Portobello street, where it had been since at least 1849. Maybe Mr Brodie took over the premises from the plumber, as by 1856 Townsend was operating from Cornish Place, where he displayed a star illuminated by gas, for the celebration of the end of the Crimean war. ukelele lady
Didn't Barkers Furniture shop use to be somewhere near that spot? The same Barkers family business that is now at Penistone Road, I believe they have moved from Hammerton Road.

ukelele lady
http://www.barkersfurniture.com/info/history_of_barkersBarkers This is where the Barkers family business used to be in the 1920s. You can see their furniture van parked at the top of Fitzwilliam Street with West Street above, the furniture is set outside on the pavement for viewing. On another picture I once saw the furniture display went right down to the other corner practically to Devonshire Street.

ukelele lady
I have just read an article in my local freebie paper about Barkers furniture business , 99 years in the making. It seems that in 1921 Ernest Morton Barker took number 66 Fitzwilliam Street from Isaac Gershman. Isaac continued his wallpaper business at number 68 Fitzwilliam Street. In 1923 Ernest Barker then took a shop on Hillsborough Road.
