Sheffield History
Another battle for you to vote on - but which way will it go.... You have to vote for one cinema as your cinema of choice.. Do you go for the plush Barkers Pool luxury of The Gaumont cinema ? Or do you place your vote for the ABC cinema on Angel Street with it's stage area, refreshment bar, and Saturday morning kids club ? ABC vs Gaumont - VOTE NOW !! Guest Trefcon
ABC Saturday morning 'ABC Minors' club. Bring along yer birthday cards and you was up on the 'stage'. Hugh auditorium, or so it seemed. The smell of the hot dogs, boiling away in the stainless steel 'couldron's', we couldn't afford one. Swallows and Amazons is all I can remember I think ? oh, saw Jaws there too, nearly retched up on my chocolate raisens when the head fell out of the bottom of the boat !! Saw 'The Towering Inferno' at the Gaumont. Saw 'The Black Panther' at the Classic. Saw 'The Warriors' at the Cine Plex. Yes, I got in to some of these under age ! Studio 5,6,7, hmm, a couple of times
Markbaby
Gaumont for me Saw "Gandhi" there and paid extra for the pullman seats. Once had a brilliant "backstage" tour by Paul Archer , the manager.
syrup
ABC I rember going to the ABC Cinema to see Ben Hurr with my Mum and sitting near the front Which was not a good idea because of the curved screen you could not keep your neck still following the chariots around the screen. DaveH
Neck and neck on the vote so far ! That doesn't surprise me at all. I liked both the ABC and The Gaumont and went to each about equally. I would find it difficult to choose between the two so I will abstain from the vote and discussion on this one.
lysander
Not on the list but anyone remember the unfinished steel work of the Odeon ....which stayed unfinished for years after the War. Saw several clasics there before it became a Bingo Hall. As for the other two,...the ABC will always be a favourite!
Guest Colin
Associated British Cinemas (ABC) of course. If only because I was assistant manager there in the early 80's.

Used to be an incredible place in the 1960's and won numerous awards of best cinema on the ABC circuit
