RichardB
When did this open, anyone know please ? I have an idea but hoping for confirmation. I believe my father was part of the original intake of pupils. If I'm correct with the year he joined 1st April 19XX which doesn't leave a lot of leeway. Guest ianb
I started at Hucklow Road in 1951 and can still remember it vividly. Playing "Rounders" was funny on the sloping playground. The walk home up the steps to Horninglow Road was a grind especially in winter. Were the winters worse then or was everything bigger and better when we were kids. I remember for two years my teacher was a Mr Taylor, a dapper gent who always came to school immaculately dressed with half a tub of Brylcream on his head. I remember that all the teachers went out of their way to be kind to the kids and it was a real pleasure to go to Hucklow Road. Funny thing is, my South African wife visited Sheffield a couple of years ago and my brother took here around Firth Park showing her my old stamping grounds but unfortunately I couldn't get away from my Business, mores the pity. Great days!!
lysander
i am a new kid on the block. I attended Hucklow Road Infant and Junior School from 1948 until 1952. My favourite teacher was Miss Black and the Headmistress was Miss Wragg...with whom I renewed my acquainence, some years later, at Hartley Brook Junior. Guest ianb
I was in the 1951 intake and I remember Miss Wragg. I hated school to start with until I had the pleasure of playing in the sand pit for the first time in my life. That school was a good grounding and I will never stop singing its praises. olive oil
Hello I was there from 1955 -1961, with my older brother Peter, and still have some school photographs. Will scan and post up when time.. Teachers all seemed to have memorable names ! - Mr Sisk ( mark on forehead from japanese camp in WW2?) Fierce -seeming, but a good teacher. Mrs Cornthwaite (became Cornflake to us, of course!) Miss Carding - Wells (marched us to Sutherland Road baths every week. Mr Gambles (Head, in a wheelchair) .. later it was Mr Bradley, a violinist, promoted music in the school I still recall the smell of the grubby wax crayons and the horror of doing 'area' calculations in maths. I also still have some BBC Time and Tune programmes, and can remember the songs! And my embroidered nightdress case ( never used, but used for hankies now - yes, I like them!) made in Junior 2. We could buy the Nature programme leaflets at the end of term for 3d. I loved the colour pictures. We were mentally "whipped" to pass the 11 plus, but lots of us did, which was our passport to wider circle - am grateful for that.

chrisp1949
I was at Hucklow Road School in the early 1960's. I remember Miss Carding-Wells - (my favourite teacher) also Mr Sisk and Mr Horne I remember being in the Xmas play one year and having to wear a reindeer head made by Mr Sisk. The hall seemed vast from the stage and speaking my lines to the rows of parents watching the play was terrifying. I was in the school orchestra formed by M r Bradley where I playing the recorder. I wonder what happened to the others in my class- I think I can remember most of their names.

We were the "red devils" I hit 70yrs old in March and I still play rounders every week at Davy's Sports Ground

Lysanderix
Could be my unreliable memory but I thought Mr Gambles was the head of the Senior School? In my days as a pupil at Hucklow Road (1948-1952)there were two schools with two heads on the Hucklow Road site.
