Sheffield History
If you were around in the 1980's what would you say summed up Sheffield in those times ? How about Sheaf Valley Baths ? The post office in Fitzalan Square ? The movies that were shown at the ABC cinema perhaps ? Or the dirty Wicker with its alehouses and porno cinema ? Blacky
Travelling upstairs on buses so dad could have a smoke. "Shop on End" sweet shop at the end of Lowedges Road - used to be packed straight after school. think it was called "Carols" as well at some point. Air-raid siren testing during the height of the cold war. The council run bonfire nights. Sat in one of the sunken seating areas on the moor on a Saturday afternoon with my mates eating Bolognese & chips from one of the kiosks. Buying the "space invaders" new United kit from Suggs - probably about 1983.

muddycoffee
The abiding memories I have of living as a teenager in the 1980s in sheffield, is the boarded up shops in town. People are too ready to blame meadowhall for the downfall of the city centre as a retail centre, but in the 1980s there were rows of empty shops. I was at college and the Polytechnic in the 1980s and so I spent a lot of time around the city centre streets, it was a busy place, but many established shops were closing or leaving the city at that time... I got married 1979 and I also went to see the Flying Pickets but I couldn't remember what year that was. Hubby wasn't impressed with them but I thought they were ok and yes I believe it was Richard Digance support act, what ever happened to him?
