Guest KneeleR
I have just acquired these envelopes and would like to ask if anyone knows about the buildings or people on Sidney Street. The letters were posted from Alexandrovsk in the Arkhangelsk, Oblast Region of Russia on the 30 December 1915 and on the 7 January 1916 (Julian calendar that's the 12 and 20 January 1916 Gregorian style). What intrigues me is that they were posted by the same person (appears to be the same handwriting) to different people in different houses on the same street. That's Mr Holiday at 76 Sidney Street and Mrs Vernon c/o Mrs Prestidge at 66 Sidney Street. I am currently assuming that the properties on Sidney Street were at that time workshops therefore the likelihood is that the letters are on commercial business purposes, after all Russia was Britain's ally at this date and was acquiring a lot of war goods that were routed around the North Cape and into Archangel. But there again they may have been residential houses and would explain the lack of business names. Any help greatly appreciated.

SteveHB
Compairing directories and maps, the numbers 66 and 76 Sidney Street, were around here, the lowest number being the furthest away (looking at the photo) towards the junction with Matilda Street.. ceegee
Spot on Dunsbyowl - the bit that was missing was that Agnes was an equestrian artist and the wife of John Henderson. She was lodging with her daughter (Martha) Jane in Sydney Street in 1861, Her husband John was lodging in Soho mmmm Name John Henderson Age 37 Estimated Year of Birth 1824 Relationship to Head of Household Lodger Occupation Equestian Address 5, Spur Street District Strand, St Anne Soho Parish St Anne Administrative County London, Middlesex Birth Place London Birth County Middlesex The Hendersons were of course "immortalised" in the Beatles (John Lennon) song "For the Benefit of Mr KIte" which appears on the Sgt Pepper album. Sadly their daughter died at the age of 21 and is buried with her father John in London's Highgate Cemetery. His body was exhumed from Ipswich Cemetery where he was first laid to rest in May 1867. His wife Agnes died on 10th October 1879, in Liverpool. She was buried in Toxteth Cemetery, Smithdown Road, with no surviving children

Guest KneeleR
Many thanks for the replies. Promising that 66 Sidney Street in 1895 was not a workshop but a hostel for rescue girls. I must find out if the property was sold on and when it ceased being a hostel. Thanks again
