  7. Old Workings under Sheffield In some old workings near Millhouses Station, stag horn picks, wood shovels and oak bars were found. The monks at Beauchief Abbey worked the coal here. In the brickyard at Millhouses iron rails 24" long and miners' tubs with wooden wheels were found in an old working. Under old property in River Lane was found an old working. It ran under the River Sheaf. Wooden rails and tubs were found here. There is a shaft in the yard of the Sheffield Skin Co. There was a working of 6ft of coal that started in a mine below Pond St. It reaches as far as Rockingham Street and the Wicker Arches. Under Moorhead is still 6ft of coal at a depth of 25ft. [ Recently when digging foundations for new buildings around Arundel Square, coal was found and extracted on 2 sites]. A coalmine was worked from Glossop Road. Old workings are found in the Crofts area and under lands on the Pitsmoor side of Nursery Street. The Pond Street colliery was called Crooks Crofts. Henry Tatton
  8. I think it means the pit is sunk on the Main coal seam.
  9. I think it was only when coking produced a more pure form of carbon (coke) that coal could be used successfully. It could of course be heated strongly on the forge first to remove the impurities and "coke" it but this would be messy on an open forge in an enclosed smithy's workshop, -the smoke, soot, fumes and smell of it. Coking actually made better use of the coal not just because it removed impurities making it cleaner to use (smokeless fuel) but all those otherwise waste impurities were all collected and put to good use, the coal gas, coal tar and the ammoniacle liquer.
  10. Is it to do with the main seams of coal they sit on?

    Woodthorpe Ravine memories

Recent Google images of the area show that construction work has revealed several interesting features. The first image at the top some brickwork remains of the pit. Two white rectangles are I think fenced off areas, these could be to do with the works or could be something that they have found, such as pit shafts or drain covers. Notice too the very black soil, indicating the presence of coal dust. The Orange object is an excavotor. The second image shows the school car park recently extended. The third shows the former school fields. Clearly a large collection of clay coloured water has developed in the middle. In the middle of the brown soil area you can see straight lines. These could be field edges if they were not caused by the work itself.

    The Moor in 1977

Well spotted, I missed the sign, so perhaps not a very temporary thing like site entrance. I am sure the name of the arcade is related to Cambridge Street (previously Coal Pit Lane) but have never seen any evidence of an earlier road just where the arcade was. Pinstone Street as we know it didn't appear until after 1880 and I think the arcade was built soon after that. Up to 1960 Cambridge Street lined up just about directly with the top of the Moorhead triangle that surrounded the Crimea Monument and I may be wrong but think the addresses on that bit were Moorhead. This photo' from an earlier post probably explains better what I mean ---------------- https://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/16570-a-birds-eye-view-of-old-sheffield/?tab=comments#comment-139917 ------------------ and this other early post has some good information about the general area --------------------- https://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/15327-68-pinstone-street-in-1881/?tab=comments#comment-131019

  14. Sheffield Daily Telegraph 15 May 1900 page 5 column a Current Topics [editorial] In the death of Mr. William Lewis Little- wood, one of the churchwardens of St. Luke’s, Sheffield, there passed away the oldest coal mer- chant in Sheffield. For over fifty years Mr. Littlewood had his offices at the Canal Wharf. He lived to see many changes in the industries of Sheffield, and more particularly in his own. In an account of his early experiences which appeared in “Rambler” a year or two ago, he recalled the time when in the working of the Fitzwilliam Collieries he was given 1s. a load to take away the small coal by canal. In those days small coal was difficult to get rid of. How different from the condition of affairs now! Mr. Littlewood was very broad in his views. Of the ample means which he gathered in his calling – materially helped by his wife, who was equally diligent in business – he gave freely to church and chapel alike. To the New Con- nexion Methodists he gave the Littlewood Memorial in Scotland Street, which cost him over £3,000. To the Walkley Church he gave a new peal of bells, and in various other ways he contributed liberally to the objects which secured his sympathy. In all his benefactions he had the ready concurrence and assistance of his wife. Born in St. Luke’s parish, he lived therein nearly the whole of his life, and on Easter Monday was elected parish warden for the fourth time. A very worthy man, one of the straightforward, open-handed old school, Mr. Littlewood will be missed in many quarters.
  15. I don't know if any members have been on the website Internet Archive but its very good, I typed Sheffield in the search and I was amazed with the books and pamphlets that lay in Universities in America and Canada. This is just a snippet which I found very interesting, take note of the name COLD ASTON and not COAL ASTON as used today, I don't think there were any coal mines near there, perhaps someone can enlighten me: I've left the original spellings and dialect in. It is considered good luck to meet two magpies, but bad luck to meet one. Of the magpie people say ' One for bad luck, two for good luck, three for a weddin', and four for a berrin If one robs a swallow's nest or a robin's nest it is said that the cows will give blood in their milk. If one finds a horse-shoe he should take it home and nail it to the stable door. It is said that When the gorse is out of blossom, Then is kissing out of fashion. The gorse, it is said, never is out of blossom. I am told that these lines are quoted by the country people in Cornwall. When a lover was forsaken by his mistress, oval-shaped garlands, made of leaves, flowers, and ribbons, were found hung early in the morning in a tree near the house of the forsaken one. This was done in Cold-Aston fifty years ago. Morris dancers, who generally came from Whittington, used to dance and sing on 'the Cross' at Cold-Aston thirty or forty years ago. They were a very numerous body, and were gaily dressed in many-coloured clothes. I have seen ' Robin Hood's men ' dressed in green coats. It is said that if you hold a poppy to your eyes it will blind you. In Mid- Yorkshire the wild poppy is called blindybuff. If a bee-master, or person who keeps bees, dies, cake and wine must be given to them on the day of his burial, or the bees will die too. Some bees at Hazelbarrow in Norton languished and died, the reason being, as was said, that they did not partake of the funeral feast of their late master. It is said that the feathers of pigeons should not be used for stuffing pillows or beds, because a man 'cannot die' on a bed which contains such feathers ; by which is meant that he cannot die easily and without pain upon such a bed. Fynes Moryson, in his Itinerary -, printed in 1617, part iii., book i., says: 'The Italian Sansovinus grossely erreth in this kinde, being otherwise a man of great wit and iudgement, who affirmes that parents in England take the pillowes from the heads of their children ready to die, out of tender pitty and charity to put them out of their paine.' It is commonly said in this neighbourhood that people cannot die easily on feather beds, and that if a dying person is lying upon a feather bed it should be changed to a flock bed. Old nurses in this district used to take the pillows, if stuffed with feathers, from the heads of people who were about to die. This booklet is in the UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO LIBRARY
  16. Probably a beacon for celebrations, as the location is visible for miles around. For the Diamond Jubilee in 1898 two bonfires were set up - at Mount Zion and Sky Edge - each 20 to 30 tons, 19 feet high, 20 feet in diameter, made of timber, tar barrels and 2 tons of coal. Another possibility is a cage for sightseers to stand safely with their telescope. Lincoln cathedral at a distance of 40 miles was visible. The building was previously called Cross Hill, (note Cross Lane still leads towards Crookes) but after alterations in 1865 which added the tower, was renamed Wesley Tower. Mr Howlden made this change in reference to his mother Ann Howlden's meeting with John Wesley. In 1782 Wesley was preaching in Norfolk Street Chapel, and on leaving he saw a little girl in the crowd, who he spoke with and gave a sixpence. She was Ann Howlden and she became a lifelong Methodist until her death in 1867.

    Pitfield Cottage

In 1911 Pitfield Cottages were occupied by two families : Mr Henry Gardner a General Labourer at an Engineers (b 1842 Tackley, Oxfordshire), his wife Caroline, their son Richard, a boilermaker (b 1887) - and - Mr Jesse Smith a General Labourer at an Iron and Coal Contractor (b 1854 Norton, Oxfordshire), his wife Martha, son John Wilfred, a labourer, a grandson and grand-daughter and boarder James Smith a corn mill labourer from Oxfordshire. They had been living at Pitfield cottages in 1901 - Henry Gardner was a Blast Furnace labourer, and his family were wife Caroline, sons Richard and Wilfred and grand-daughter Annis. Jesse Smith was living with wife Martha and boarder James. In 1891 both families were at Pitfield, Gardner being a furnace stoker and as well as Caroline, there were four sons and three daughters, the eldest son Henry being a coal miner. Jesse Smith was coal mining, as was his son Albert Ibbotson. Jesses' wife Martha was there, as was boarder James. In 1881 both families were living at Jeffcock's Houses (was this the sames premises under a different name? - perhaps not as the 1855 map does show Pit Field Cottages). An additional two familes lived at Jeffcocks Houses in 1881- James Green's and William Helley's. In 1875 Henry Gardner had been fined 20s plus costs for exposing his daughter Elizabeth to the public whilst she had measles - this was in a crowded room at the Queens Head in Mortomley.

Was this building a court house?

I think you are thinking of Parade Chambers at the corner of East Parade, by M.E. Hadfield & Son, built 1883-85, for Pawson and Brailsford, printers and stationers Cairns Chambers were designed by Charles Hadfield and built between 1894 and 1896 for Henry & Alfred Maxwell, solicitors and later used by Hadfield and Cawkwell, architects and many others. By 1905 there were at least ten companies with offices in there, the majority having the address of "Cairns Chambers, 19 St. James Street" but I see that the Sheffield Coal Company address was Cairns Chambers, Church Street on the post by RLongden

    Or, Perhaps Not

Now, - we still teach the basic chemistry of iron and steel, and we may even do a laboratory practical in which we reduce a more easily "smelted and melted" metal such as copper or lead from its oxide to illustrate the point. But, - it is many, many years since we last did the destructive distillation of coal or took students on a visit to a now long gone local Sunbrite coking plant. It may be because the coal industry, and our dependence on these products (e.g. coal gas) has diminished. But it is probably because the chemical you list as by-products are nearly all carcinogens and are either banned or have very severe restrictions on their use and availability. We do teach a lot about fractional distillation of crude oil and the products from oil. Perhaps it's just that oil has taken precidence over coal as our fuel of choice.

    Quarry - Mayfield Valley Ish

Nobody is ever going to win this argument because you only have to move a few metres over the surface, to the other side of a fault line, to find a completely different series of rocks. The map I have was published by the Ordnance Survey in 1956 and reprinted to 1:50,000 scale in 1974. The geological survey dates from 1930/1952. I bought the map in a bookshop in Bakewell about 15 years ago. It's reference is IGS Sheffield Sheet 100. It shows surface rock types in the North Derbyshire/South Yorkshire/Notts area with fault lines and coal outcrops. The section line runs from Curbar Gap to the Dinnington area. The section along the bottom shows an amazing number of coal seams especially under the Todwick area. When I dug out a small pond a few years ago where we live now I discovered the top of the Ringinglow Coal about 2 feet down, according to the map it outcrops about 50 metres further north. HD
  24. I lived on Lilac road in the 50s 2 bedroomed house and believe you me there was no bathroom either. The bath was in the kitchen with a wooden board over it. The toilet was outside and the coal place under the stairs in the kitchen so on wet days coal muck would be trod in. Or if you were out he dumped the delivery in the yard and mum would have to shovel it up and bring it into the coal place. Lyn PS I probably know your mate. He didn't appear on the front page of the retro last week did he?
