Hi Mike You've actually found it. the cluster of buildings on Douse Croft Lane is actually two former farms. The ones nearest the road are Douse Croft Farm, the ones set further back now called Peter Wood Cottage are really Peter Wood Farm, immediately below Peter Wood itself. I'm afraid I can't give you any pointers as to which land it farmed, and I'm still trying to work out the photos mentioned! The steep bank was probably the sloping land near the bottom of the hill on the left called Washer Lands. (That name goes back to the 17th Century at least). The Mayfield Brook runs in the bottom, and that's presumably the river next to which they set up their tents. Regards Bayleaf

Hello all, I'm the current scout leader at Fulwood and have been given some old annual reviews from 1949, 1950, 1954 and 1959. They are packed with incredibly interesting facts about the scout troop since it started in 1949, or so I thought - it turns out the first troop was set up in 1923. However, there are several reports of camps at a place called Peter Wood Farm which must have been local as one reference states that it only took them 45 minutes to walk there with their trek cart*. Others refer to four tents being set up next to the river, and one about rolling kit down a steep bank. (* they met at the Guildhall) I have checked all my maps and can find no ref to a farm called Peter Wood. I visited central library yesterday and had nearly all the staff intrigued as well, hunting high and low for maps of all ages. A thanks in one of the reviews to a Mr Woodhouse allowed us to trace him in a directory of businesses in Sheffield as the owner of Peter Wood Farm but that did not give any further address details apart from Fulwood 10. He is still listed in the 1957 directory, however by 1969 the farm is held by a B.W Broomhead who is still there in 1973. I wondered if the farm had been consumed by residential development, however as it is still listed in 1973 this is not likely to be the case. Does anyone recognise, or know, where Peter Wood farm is - or was? The only incling that I have is that it is the farm that is known on maps as Douse Croft Farm on Douse Croft Lane as there is a Peterwood Cottage there. I look forward to you help.

Indeed it is! Which is a very modern setting for a King Edward VIII postbox (I wonder if it has always been in that particular spot?). The canopy was good though - it kept the rain off while I took the picture. ;) It was easy to find once I had these directions from Chris Smith at Flickr: "I notice you ask where the other one in Sheffield is - according to the Letter Box Study Groups list it is at in S 6 Box number 528 - PO, Leppings Lane (BP/SPAR garage) Grid ref SK333910 UK." I don't think I would have given that particular postbox a second glance otherwise.

Does anyone remember this product in it's blue and white box with a picture of my great great grandmother Maria Sellars on each box? The business was passed from mother to daughter for 4 generations before being sold to Tomlinson a chemist in Woodhouse in 1961. Over the last few weeks (months) I have been wandering the back streets of Sheffield ,looking at old buildings that I thought are Victorian and should be saved. My daughter was looking for some new worktops for the extension that we have built at the back of her house on Derbyshire Lane. I thought that the works that I had photoed a few weeks ago were closed but having gone on the internet I rang the proprietor and found that their works had JUST received Grade 2 Listing for the block.ABSOLUTELY BRILL!!!! Memory says: Joe's Cafe in the 70's had "wallpaper" made up of a picture from the Lake district ( Tarn Hows?) that went all round the room. When Joe's migrated to William Street in Broomhall started going to Butlers on Broad Lane. Can I trust Memory?

Dont worry too much...keep in mind my Thirty Year rule. It would seem that every now and then the people who know best (I use that phrase very loosely) at Sheffield City Council get rid of something that we have paid for...then thirty years or so later pay to have it back. The trams went in the 1960's but by the 90's were back....and the power station that the towers served went in the 1970's and they are now building another. I reckon that if this works out, my thirty year rule, some time in 2020 some bright young thing will propose an underpass in the middle of a road somewhere with a large hole in it to let light in.....or maybe some tower blocks near Norfolk Park or in Jordanthorpe. Its not all daft though. Before they spend all our money on new things they always get rid of stuff we've already bought so looking into my crystal balls (Stop laughing you at the back) I can also see that the council will rebuild Woodseats and get rid of that rediculous bus lane they spent a fortune on. The round-about outside the Midland Station will be rebuilt for the 473rd time and they will remove that Chineese Steel wall so it can be replaced with a sculpture made of Russian Steel instead. To get the Russian sculpture in to place they will have to knock part of the steel works at Tinsley down but such is life. The new market area planned for the Moor will be knocked down and rebuilt on the site of the old Castle Market and the Wicker will be opened up to traffic again after they have removed Derick Dooley Way. Thats enough ranting for now I think. Glad I live in Rotherham!!

There's a similar name sign on Whiteley Wood Road facing the top of Ivy Cottage Lane, but it can't be more than 96 years old as it only got that name in 1912, it was previously Meadow Lane.
