    Sharrow Lane School.

Sharrow Lane School is closing this month. A new building has been constructed at the side of Sitwell Road. There is an initiative beginning to enable former pupils to visit the school and hopefully discover long lost friends ! I attended between 1951 and 1958. My teacher for 1957/8 was Mr Foster. Headmaster was Mr Davis. First started in the infants with Mrs Woodger, then Mrs Goodfellow and Miss Hare. Into the juniors with Mr Furniss, Mrs Pearson, Mr Self and Mr Wild. Does any one know of any plans already made for a visit by ex pupils. If so let us know please. Whose names do you remember ? Here's a list of some I can remember. Barry Brown, Gerald Kersh, Christine Charlesworth, Nina Heathfield, Elaine Joynes, Maureen Emily, Elizabeth Brownhill, Linda Firth, Christine Broadhurst, Margaret Coffey, Patrick Solway, Pauline Allen, Jennifer Ellis, Mike O'Sullivan, David Morley, John Warrington, Ian Dean, Stan Rowbotham, Ann Dale, Barbara Childs, Carol Titterton, Jaqueline Foxcroft, Linda Beecroft, Andrew Barson, Trevor Briggs, Graham Carpendale, Lawrence Bellinger, John Gascoigne, David Jones and Susan Pitts. Not a bad recollection after 50 years.
  2. Hello everyone, wondering if anyone can help me,on the back of an old family portrait I have discovered a backing board advertising H&P Brewers Orchard Lane Sheffield,I cannot find any information about this company in any of the directories etc, any ideas?
  3. I'm after some help please. Paddock Farm at Lane Top was diagonally opposite the Pheasant. I wonder if anyone knows the history of it as I can find little beyond it being a racehorse training operation, with a St Leger winner, and visited by Lillie Langtry and the Prince of Wales. My reason for interest is that I'm trying to find the location of a house called "Tythe Lathe". This was built by John Wilkinson of Crowder House in the late 1700s when he moved out of Crowder, with a view to his wife Mary living there after his death (John died in 1812 and Mary in1835). An agreement was signed in 1786 which set up a "fee tail" so that Crowder would pass to his eldest son - who unfortunately died young, so negating the agreement. John's will required Crowder to be mortgaged to provide funds for his widow, the 1786 agreement intended to keep Crowder in the family despite the mortgage. It all went terribly wrong... The reason for suspecting Paddock Farm to be John's "Tythe Laithe" comes from some lease agreements made with the Duke of Norfolk. Lease Far Fields 24th December 1789 John Wilkinson. The Far Fields in five parts, and one of the Line Fields, totalling 27a 12r 27p, together with all the tithe of corn, grain or composition money in lieu arising from and belonging to the Owner as well of the said hereby demised premises as some other Lands called the Tithe Fields of the said Duke of Norfolk in the possession of the said John Wilkinson. Lease for 21 years at rent of £24 per year. Lease Tithe Lathe 8th November 1798 between John Wilkinson and the Duke of Norfolk. All that Messuage or Dwelling House formerly a Tithe Barn with stable corn House and Lathe lately erected by the said John Wilkinson. And all those two Fields Closes or Parcels of Land commonly called or known by the names of the Line Fields containing by survey the separate Quantities mentioned in the margin of these presents and in the whole eight acres three roods and twenty six perches or thereabouts and which said premises are situate and being near the four Lane ends in the said Parish of Ecclesfield and were late in Lease to James Turner and are now and for several years last past have been in the Occupation of the said John Wilkinson. The Lease is from 29th September 1798 for 21 years at rent of £10 10s plus one days Boon work with two horses per year. The Line fields (called Lincroft in 1637) were just north of the Crowder estate adjacent to Elm Lane (called Lincroft Lane in 1637), the Far Fields were on the north side of Elm Lane. The only buildings the 1850 map shows in this area is Cliffe House, the farm at Lane End, now Paddock Farm, and buildings opposite Paddock Farm. (map below)

    #1 Brook Lane, Hackenthorpe

It appears that my Staniforth family lived at #1 Brook Lane throughout most of the 1800s and into the very early 1900s, would anyone have a directory that would show the residential history. The road is in Hackenthorpe which obviously was part of Beighton Parish before 1900. Any help would be appreciated.
  5. OK, one isn't a photo, but, bonus, the other one is .... I'd been told the old stones outside the Cathedral were old gravestones, now, sadly the inscriptions won away. But I never knew that they were originally laid down flat, as per the following pictures Well, they did always say Campo Lane was very narrow ! Seems they "stole" a bit off the back of the Churchyard, then "stole" a bit off the front as well. Caused a bit of a stir - I'm sure the kids used to sing a rhyme about it, going up the Broomhall or somewhere to abuse Rev Wilkinson ... First Coal

Generous Act On Saturday the 18th inst about three o clock in the afternoon a waggon heavily loaded with large and excellent coats drawn by 50 men colliers with a boy sitting on the top waving an emblem of the British flag arrived at the Infirmary Sheffield. Dr Earnest, on enquiring the cause of this proceeding, learnt that these coals were the first taken from the new pit near the canal basin and that they had been sent to this Charity as a present by the Sheffield Coal Company; Messrs Holy, Wilson, Dunn and Co. This generous act and the manner of doing it are well worthy of public attentions and honourable record

  18. My father who died in 1959 had a friend who attended this church. I think his name was Milner (could be Billy or Tommy?) I know he lived on Homestead Road at Sheffield Lane Top. Is there anyone left who might remember the family?
  19. FALL IN THE PRICE OF COAL. The demand for house coal at Sheffield is extremely slack, and the agents of several of the collieries have reduced their prices to the extent of from 1s. 6d. to 2s 6d. per ton. The opinion entertained by many agents is that by Spring, fuel will be comparatively cheap. http://www.cultrans.com/
  20. I would be interested to learn something about the coal riots of around 1893, especially those that were connected with the Newton Chambers Collieries in the Chapeltown/High Green area. I especially wonder if the events led to a lot of miners leaving the district and having to move to other pits.
  21. I have a problem, I am trying to identify two farms nearly opposite each other on Bingley Lane. Bingley House (O.S. maps) is now at least a farm and looks 19th c to me but I think replaced an older one, I have no idea what was there before, Topside of the lane is Bingley farm (O.S. maps) or Bingley Lane Farm. This was due to be demolished because of a tree problem but not now. It has evidently some great age. I have references to a "...farm on Bingley Lane" 1819 and later stated "... a farm at Bingley House" mentioned 1835. So description inconclusive. I have a Mark and an earlier Charles Dyson (pre 1828, possibly pre 1800) Both cutlers and mentioned in connection with the "Bingley House Trust" - set up to educate the Stannington poor in the 17th c. and associated with Underbank School and chapel. "Revitt, Jonathan, Born Mar 06 1820 in Nether Gate, Stannington, Yorkshire, Died Jun 06 1896 in Bingley House, Stannington" (Tribal page.) There are Beals at Bingley Farm (I reckon) in the 1841 Census, another cutler.not yet found later Census I have been unable to track down any old pics or old maps . Can anyone help please? Mike

    Joiner Lane

Hi, I've been a member for a while now but this is my first post. I'm doing some family history research, and in the 1901 census my great great Grandfather was living at number 30 Joiner Lane and further research reveals he was living at this address up until his death in 1909. However, Joiner Lane seems to have now disappeared. I have seen a map which shows Joiner Lane running parallel to Joiner Street, just off Nursery Street, but the map I've seen (50's I think), doesn't show any dwellings. I'm hoping to find any photos and/or maps of the area for the period when he was living there. Also, the 1911 census shows my great Grandfather living at 53 Kilton Street (another street which has now gone), and also shows him as employed at the Silver Plate Works. I looked into this and the only Silver Plate works I can in Sheffield at the time is Beaumont Bros on Joiner Lane! Any help with this would be very much appreciated.
  24. One of my family worked as a miner for the Barber Walker Coal Company in the 1920's. Can anyone give me a potted history of the company and what happened to it. For some unknown reason he left mining in 1928 to join up in the army and unfortunately was killed in the air raids on Malta in 1942. Any information about the company would be appreciated. PopT
  25. While out taking pictures of the old works around Neepsend Lane, I came across this one but I cant for the life of me remember who's works it was, can anyone remember?
