  1. Hi i know its a long shot, but does anyone have any old photos of Weddings that took place at St Barts Church, Carbrook - the top of carbrook street from 1950's-onwards. I lived over the wall from there Newton terrace and saw many a wedding stood in our yard with my chin on our wall looking over .. My Grandad was the caretaker. What it is i have searched and searched but can't find a picture of the row of houses I lived in if someone took a photo of a wedding maybe they might have took the picture of our house as well. Since back then there was no cropping or enhancing pic's so I might get lucky.. I also tell people where i lived but no one seemes to remember these houses there was a row of houses at the front of us. just before clifton street going towards broughton lane. i lived there from 1955-69 when we had to move as was being demolished. but my aunt had the house before us before taking over the Excelcior pub top of Carbrook Street. Ii am also looking for any photo's taken on the same side of the church looking across. where all the row of shops was. for example. Lants chip shop./samick motors etc... but lower if anyone has them passed Carbrook St where Jacksons chip shop was... here's hoping.. Thanks

  6. Hi, Can anyone help me out. The first football match I every attended was at Bramall Lane with my Dad. I can't remember exactly what year it was but would have been mid-late 1950's. The game was a charity match between SU and an All Star team. Again all I can remember is that Mike & Bernie Winters and Tommy Steele were in the all star team. Can anyone tell me the year and who played for the All Star team? Yoadbear
  7. Driving into Durham the other day my wife was reading aloud to me from "The History of Sheffield High Street", she is, bless her interested in Old Sheffield, Campo Lane, Hartshead, Church Street and particularly High Street and the Market Square of old. As we approached Durham Town Centre her task was to negotiate us round the roundabouts so we could find the daughters new flat. Easy enough except for the no entries and one-way systems that plague us all. There was a silence then she said "I can't find the roundabout !" (A690 - pretty major item) ... <pause> I glanced over and spotting the second of Sheffield's four Town Halls and Virgins Row, I burst out laughing - Yup, she'd got Gosling's 1736 Map, wrong Town and only 272 years adrift ! Were there many "Ye Roundabouts" in Olde Sheffield Towne ?

    Stubbin

title....forename....surname...occupation...abode......directory .........Francis J......SEARLE......................Stubbin....Kelly's 1893 Does anyone know what Stubbin for Abide means and why is the occupation blank? Occupation blank I've been told may mean gentleman a man of means/private income? Also pointed out to me as I originally come from Firth Park it may have a connection to Stubbin Lane?

    Wadsley Bridge

I visited Sheffield last week and was suprised to see that the Railway pub was boarded up and also the Gate Inn. The New Bridge and the Travellers were still going. I met my 2nd wife in the Railway where she worked as a bar maid in the late 70's and was very sad to see them closed. I had a few pints in the Shaky at Hillsboro' Corner with a few old school mates and was pleased to see that Hillsborough is still thriving and busy. I lived on Shenstone Road and was upset to see Leppings Lane in such a state.

    Recent developments

After a second look I hardly know anywhere ! Great work, please go for more walks/drives/Red light district cruises and generate more of these ! Thanks. I was once accosted by A Lady of the Night near The Green Lane Works/Bowling Green Street area, after asking "Are you looking for busineSS ?", then apologising (12 noon, works out time I suppose) she asked if I was lost - only by 160 years Luv - that confused her - George Arthur, where are you ? I'd like to see the district now, but, I don't suppose it's an easy place to photograph - or is it ?

  15. Yes, I can remember Sheffield being like a ghost town during works weeks. I worked in the Castle Market and it was the quietest two weeks of the year, so we used the time to give the shop a good fettling (love that word!) It did feel strange getting the bus to work and back, with few passengers, and Pond St almost deserted, Sheffield almost felt like a different city. Ah well, thats took me down memory lane for a little while, thank you. ;-)

    Emmaus-Sipelia works

I seem to be taking a lot of photo,s lately of old Sheffield Works. The other day I was on Blast Lane and came across the Sipelia Works. In it is a commune for the homeless. Their shop is well worth a visit but they also have a potted history of the site. http://www.emmaus-sheffield.org.uk/2.html
