  1. Does anyone remember this product in it's blue and white box with a picture of my great great grandmother Maria Sellars on each box? The business was passed from mother to daughter for 4 generations before being sold to Tomlinson a chemist in Woodhouse in 1961. They traded from 64 Broad Lane, then St Georges Terrace and finally 277 Glossop Road. More detail can be seen by visiting my website http://www.whiteheadm.co.uk/#/sellars-salve/4534565390
  2. I was sat outside The Dog and Partridge on Trippet Lane last night, quaffing a Vimto, when someone happened to see that the green paint was peeling off and that yellow tiles were hidden beneath the paint per The Ship Inn Shalesmoor.Wouldnt the pub look a million times better with its original livery on view?

    Sheffield Cafe's Of The Past

Memory says: Joe's Cafe in the 70's had "wallpaper" made up of a picture from the Lake district ( Tarn Hows?) that went all round the room. When Joe's migrated to William Street in Broomhall started going to Butlers on Broad Lane. Can I trust Memory?
  5. Dont worry too much...keep in mind my Thirty Year rule. It would seem that every now and then the people who know best (I use that phrase very loosely) at Sheffield City Council get rid of something that we have paid for...then thirty years or so later pay to have it back. The trams went in the 1960's but by the 90's were back....and the power station that the towers served went in the 1970's and they are now building another. I reckon that if this works out, my thirty year rule, some time in 2020 some bright young thing will propose an underpass in the middle of a road somewhere with a large hole in it to let light in.....or maybe some tower blocks near Norfolk Park or in Jordanthorpe. Its not all daft though. Before they spend all our money on new things they always get rid of stuff we've already bought so looking into my crystal balls (Stop laughing you at the back) I can also see that the council will rebuild Woodseats and get rid of that rediculous bus lane they spent a fortune on. The round-about outside the Midland Station will be rebuilt for the 473rd time and they will remove that Chineese Steel wall so it can be replaced with a sculpture made of Russian Steel instead. To get the Russian sculpture in to place they will have to knock part of the steel works at Tinsley down but such is life. The new market area planned for the Moor will be knocked down and rebuilt on the site of the old Castle Market and the Wicker will be opened up to traffic again after they have removed Derick Dooley Way. Thats enough ranting for now I think. Glad I live in Rotherham!!

I think I read somewhere there used to be a quarry on Selborne Road. One of the partners lived on the end of Benty Lane, he was the proud father of twins who were very popular in his day. He strted another firm in Sheffield which is still in business. I think the other partner was William Marsden who once owned the 3 Merry Lads which was named after his three sons. I wish I could find out the information for you but it is in amongst my ruins somewhere but someone will either verify what I have posted or put the record straight. Happy Days!

    Spirit of the dead pub

MEET Michael Liversidge, founder of the Sheffield Dead Pubs Society. Only joking, but he has just brought out a picture book about them. Time Gentlemen, Please, sub-titled The Demise of the Sheffield Public House, lists well over a hundred. What's more, Michael's had a drink in most of them. We're outside the Tramway Hotel on London Road. He's supped there as well. There are two pictures of it in his book, both of them with trams on. "Pubs are our social history. At one time you'd trust the landlord of your local with your money before the bank. It's getting that way again," he says. Pubs can demise in Michael's book in several ways. They can be demolished like the Rose Inn on Penistone Road, Hillsborough, to make way for a McDonalds, or the Hole in the Wall on Savile Street. Then there was the Enfield on Broughton Lane, Carbrook. "Me and my father had a drink in there and two weeks later I was driving past and it had been demolished. No one had said a word." But at least he had a picture of it. Then there was the White Horse on Malinda Street. "It fell down while being renovated," says the caption. Others are still standing but empty, like The Viaduct on The Wicker, the Shiregreen Hotel on Sicey Avenue, or the Queens Hotel on Scotland Street. And some have been given different uses. The Mill Tavern, also known as the Albion Hotel and Old Mill Tavern, on Earsham Street, Pitsmoor, had one too many for the road and is now an undertakers. The Staniforth arms on Staniforth Road is now a restaurant, while the Old Blue Bell on Worksop Road, which once sold Gilmour's Windsor Ales, is a mosque. The Norfolk Arms on Attercliffe Road has become a sauna. Quite a few have been turned into flats, like the Royal Hotel on Abbeydale Road. Some pubs don't go without a fight. The Talbot on Hoyle Street became Ye Old Toad and then the Good Doctor, but to no avail. It was pulled down. Occasionally a pub does a runner. There's a picture of the old Harlequin on Johnson Street, which has moved round the corner and taken up residence in the former Manchester Arms on Nursery Street. "The book charts the changes and developments of the city," says Michael, who brought out an A-Z of Sheffield Pubs 10 years ago. Then the pictures were postage stamp-sized to make way for the text and he got several hundred letters from readers wanting to see the pictures. "It's taken 10 years but I've done it." Among the dead pubs is the Players Cafe on Attercliffe Common, which is a bit of a cheat as it was a short-lived restaurant. "It sold beer," said Michael, who made sure he had a pint there and who included it for sentimental reasons. "It was my old school, Carbrook Elementary. I was in a pub from five to 11!" n Published by Pickard Communication at £12.99 from local shops or: www.youbooks.co.uk http://www.thestar.co.uk/diary/Spirit-of-t...-pub.4250349.jp
