    The Sicey

"The Sicey" Sorry its no longer there, that Pub played a big part in my life, where do I start? Well when I was in my early teens about 1963 ,my Mum worked at Gibbons fish and chip shop on Nethershire lane shops, most nights when she got home, she would always have a story to tell about the nights events. One particular night Mum came home smiling saying, "guess who's eating Gibbons fish and chips tonight?" who I said ,Mum replied "Morecambe and Wise" I was amazed!! Apparentley the Landlord of the Sicey Hotel was a regular customer of mums, and he was also a Agent for Entertainers, and on occasions his artists would stay overnight at the Sicey, this particular night he was on his way home from the Greasboro WMC, he rushed into the shop for fish and chips 3 times,he said can you be quick Peggy as I've got"Morecambe and Wise"waiting in the Car , Mum thought he was fibbing, but she said they waved from the car when he set off. Well Mum said one was wearing glasses and the other was short, anyway its one of those stories that has stuck with me all these years. The Sicey came into my life again 2 years later, when my Grandma got remarried,I went to the reception at the Sicey, there my uncle Edgar who arrived in his 3 wheeled motorised invalid car(he had a wooden leg) , proceeded to get blotto, and had to be physically restrained from driving home in his 3 wheeler . The "Sicey" surfaced again quite a few times later in my life, this time it was in the 70s/80s, I ended up Delivering the Beer, when I worked for Whitbreads as a Drayman. I saw a few Landlords over the years, but only one name stands out, Pete Gleadhall I can't remember the year , but I remember he went from the Sicey to the "Plough" at "Low Bradfield". Well hope I haven't bored you all, best regards Steve

  19. I hate NIMBYies. We had them round here a year or two back.....a local farmer wanted to sell off a bit of land to a comapny who intended to erect some wind turbines. I love the drive up to my Mams house in Durham because we pass all these turbines near Hartlepool.... they look great. But because of some people who thought their houses would be worth £1.50 less we are still burnig coal to create electric and Laughton has no beautiful windmills Getting back to the Woodhead.......how can any one say that rail lines are ugly or detract? Think of the Malton to Pickering......or Settle to Carlisle or how about the Peak line though to Matlock e.t.c????? The quicker these homeowners realise that they have their own brains and dont have to simply follow the latest house price scare story in the Daily Mail the better. I cant see why they dont get it....yes at first some may be put off by the work men and noise of construction and there will be a bit of dust on their BMW 318's but in the long run the prices of thier Barrat Boxes will rise when others realise they are located to good transport links. Go back to the 1960's....I'd bet my left ear that the people of...let say....Thorpe Hesley were whinging about the construction of the new motorway....but look at the place now...because of the motorway their houses are worth a fortune!!
  20. If you haven't found it there's a book called AA Command by Colin Dobinson that lists the sites, and one called Sheffield's Golden Frame by Bill Bevan which has info about the Starfish site. There is a history of coal mining in the 18th and 19th centuries, mostly around Ringinglow then small scale following the seams along the hillside to Greystones. In fact the last mine at High Storrs closed in 1929. There are some reports published by the Friends of the Porter Valley covering archaeology, geology, mining and quarrying and ecology around the valley. They're all available for purchase, but you'll find them in the public and both Uni libraries as well. The Porter Valley is 'my patch', and if I can be any help, let me know! And good luck with the dissertation!
  21. Yep. That would be the same concrete base I saw. I haven't got any more info regarding the pit in the woods, although I will be going back up there next week. I did know that there were AA sites nearby (Bents Green) so while I was up there (looking at a potential Anderson shelter in nearby allotments, next to Shepherd Wheel)) I thought I would poke around the hill side. Does the area have a history of coal mining then? (Bell pits were mentioned) I am starting out on an undergraduate dissertation regarding the application of archaeology to second world war Sheffield/South Yorkshire. Although excavation is out of the question, I would like to do an earthworks survey and possibly field walking (although thats more to find any hidden associated structures or areas, rather than finds). At the moment the starfish site on Houndkirk Road might be the best candidate, although I have not had the chance to visit yet. I literally started a feasibility study yesterday, and the project proper won't start until later in the year.
