  1. According to the same source : "the pre-Reformation chapel at Ecclesall was built in the 13th Century By Sir Ralph de Ecclesall, at a point almost opposite the north end of the present road known as Silver Hill and near to the ancient Manor House called Ecclesall Hall, within the grounds attached to the house of Mr Charles E Vickers". However, since opinions are divided as to the site of Ecclesall Hall, the best guess is somewhere between the bottom of Knowle lane and the present church.
  2. I'm trying to find the location of the Weston Cinema, (known locally I believe as The Flea Pit) but don't know it's exact location. My reference book gives no information other that the name and the fact that it existed. Weston St? St Philips Rd? Answers and info gratefully received.
  3. I vaguely remember being told of a refuge, close the old Ecclesall Library (bottom of Knowle Lane) which was a sort of shelter for monks travelling to and from Beauchief Abbey. Did I imagine or dream this? Someone help me out here, it's beginning to annoy me.

    Sheffield Botanical Gardens

The Bear Pit housed two bears until the 1870's when they were removed, following an incident when a child fell into the pit and was killed. It has a pair of side dens that were used to house the bears.

One of our favourite walks as kids, going onto Endcliffe woods. We used to climb onto the bear pit wall and jump in to the leaves the keepers put there to rot down. There were two large cannon stored in the glass houses, don't know what happened to them, maybe someone on here might have an idea. Jack.

For those no longer living in Sheffield

Not sure. When I was over in January, I got off the Parkway and joined the new road out towards Hillsborough, but spent most of the time trying to figure out where I was. I was really impressed by the new road and thought it one of the best signposted roads I'd ever been on. Dead easy to be in the right lane just by following the signs. Don't know what Sheffielder's think of it but I was impressed! I remember Corporation St as being gridlocked several times at rush hour.

  13. Bayleaf There is a plan of the racecourse in Stephen Johnson’s Racing Times in Sheffield, although it just gives the boundaries. Racecourse Farm was on Brown Hills Lane near the junction with Roper Hill. The farm was demolished although part of its boundary wall still stands – see the link the exact location: http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.366104&a...r=0&src=msa Regards Flatlander

    Where is Waverley?

Does this help? Waverley lane, S13, Waverley Rd S9 from the old Waverley Coal Co Ltd. The company offices were on Main Rd Darnall, alongside Waverley Rd. Waverley Lane, some distance away led to the company's Waverley Colliery. The company became part of the Nunnery Colliery Co. (From Street Names of Sheffield by Peter Harvey, RIP) The connection with Nunnery colliery would bring it near the Parkway as you say.
