Must have been after the service in the City Hall. Each District started an a side road off Division Street and paraded down past the City hall for the march past. (They may still do it) Then down Leopolde Street to turn into Trippet Lane and fall out outside the Scout Shop. I always felt cheated that it was so short a march.

Last time I saw it there was a laundrette on the ground floor and flats above. It's on the corner of Page Hall road and Hinde House lane. Built I believe about the same time as the Page Hall Market. I think it later became a furniture retailer. He's not much an advert for his trade though - looks like he slept in that suit he he

Now these negatives just keep turning up. This particular viewpoint was clearly a favourite of mine for testing new cameras and lenses out. These are from 1980 - 81, on what was clearly a sunny day. The first goes over further to the left than previously without getting the side of the tower block in shot and shows a view down the full length of Spring Lane from its top corner with Northern avenue to its bottom junction with Park Grange Road. The last one goes further to the right than previously looking up Northern Avenue almost as far as the Vulcan at its junction with Cradock Road, the changing rooms on Arbourthorne playing fields are now visible. All of these photos have a degree of overlap making them ideal for one of my panoramic shots but the software I have for stitching the pictures together tends to object to having to handle black and white pictures and comes back with some sort of error code, - so no panorama yet.

I am new to this site and have been reading with interest. I used to go to the Paragon, Victory, Capitol Lane Top, and most remembered the Sunbeam where I met my wife over 50 years ago now. The cinemas in those days used to put out a whats on card which usually listed all the films they would be showing for a particular month. I still have some from 1957 namely the Paragon, Roxy and Victory.

It is called the Sportsman. It's on a road parallel with the M1 I think it may be called Blackburn Road - my Grandad worked at Arthur Lees and live on Shiregreen - obviously far too tempting on the long walk home. It runs down from Wincobank to the old Grange Lane Irailway station below Lower Shiregreen. remember going in to 'retrieve' him one day back in the 1970's the rooms on the right had at least a couple of snooker tables in. We knew things were ove when he 'brought his cue home'. :)

Green Wheel Lane, Wisewood, Bradfield?
ukelele lady replied to yorkshirecath's topic in Sheffield History Chat
I use to visit Green Wheel Lane when I was young , my mother use to take me to my relatives who lived in one of the cottages. We all knew it as Little Matlock. Yes Peter my cousin still lives there, the house being passed down the generations. -
I believe it was the Outer Circular. I used to get off on Hatfield House Lane.

A walk along the Jervis Lum So here we are at the very top of East Bank Hill about 700 - 800 feet above sea level. It is the highest point around and from here the land slopes away in every direction. The highest road is Hurlfield Road and on the site of Hagg Lane (now no more) where the water tanks stood is its summit, a high point to provide water sufficient supply pressure. The water works building, (sorry about the glare, started early on a sunny Sunday morning)

A tough ask for someone that left Sheffield 28 years ago (for many it will be longer); how about near neighbours to Paradise Square, New Street and Figtree Lane ? I do remember signalling to turn into New Street with a Volvo Estate in 2005, the Police in the car behind me were quite amused. Maybe start another thread for "appreciable patches of cobbles showing through ill-repaired tarmac" or a "potholes of Sheffield award"

The school on Mansfield Road (Intake Junior School) is also very close to the Noahs Ark, so Gramps could be right about old Parishes, In fact when Sheffield ended at Intake terminus the signs on Birley Moor Road (the Derbyshire extension od Mansfield Road, the old A616) read something like "Rural borough of Chesterfield" Anyway, we digress from the topic of this thread Handsworth water Works, a.k.a. Hagg Lane Tanks Water Works, dated 1887
