Ah - so near and yet so far. Derbyshire Lane isn't on. There's been confusion about where the bombs fell around there. According to my Mom (who was in the Cellar when their house collapsed, so she should know) a bomb fell opposite their house. We can't find any record of it or even anything close by. Still a mystery.

Where born: Sheffield Civil parish: Ecclesall Bierlow Ecclesiastical parish: Golcar County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England That is what the records look like for those living in that particular bit of Ecclesall Bierlow (The bit that is now the bottom end of the more area and bramall lane).... Other parts of Ecclesall Bierlow have differnet Ecclesiastical parishes (what ever these represent - part of my query). For example St Matthew is another one representing a different part of E.B. N

I wonder if anyone can help identify the people in this photo. My great grandfather, Fred Selwood, was an Edge Tool Forger (he is pictured 3rd row back second from right). He lived in Brightside Bierlow (Kilton Lane?) in 1891 and in Nether Hallam in 1901. Would especially like to know who the girl is. Many thanks ~ Tracy

Hi Wow, love the before and after shots. I used to go to Sheffield once a month with my mum and dad to take my nana shopping this would have been in the late sixties early seventies. How different it all looks now. Is the map taken in 1950's showing Dixon Lane as it more or less was like in the 1860's. ie is number 14 likely to be where Samuel lived?what is the 14 1/2 all about.? Which house do you reckon it is from the photos I reckon it could be the foam shop?. I tried to make out where the pub was three doors down from the Norfolk Arms. All that hustle and bustle in the 50's and look at it now just a thoroughfare. I shall see what I can on Bower and Ibberson now Thanks for all your help. Helene

Hi Helen, welcome to the site. Looking at the 1881 census I would say Dixon Lane is the correct spelling, however there would not have been a Iron & Steel depot there. Dixon ln was and is to some extent the heart of Sheffield's markets area. In Sheffield there would have been numerous Iron and Steel depots. Lets see what turns up

Thanks for your input. I shall definitely try this. From separate sources I have knowledge that one of my direct line ancestors a John born in 1789 went to stay with his brother William Moore sometime around 1835 in the Norton area. I ten have a reference that William took over the Little London forge (is this what is now know as Abbeydale forge - the museum?) in 1837. I am assuming that the John and William shown in the 1841 Norton census are these two guys. Both John and William were born in Belbrougton in Worcestershire having descended from another John Moore who we know was married in the church there in 1641. They were all scythe makers working at water wheel driven forges. All the male Moore's carried on in this line of work - my father being the last working as a scythe maker at Clay Wheels Lane forge up until 1951.
