  1. Manor Park Crescent ....the road winds up from Manor Park shops , all way up to Manor Castle on Manor Lane (just noticable top centre)- the greenery to the left is part of the City Rd Cemetry - now that area has graves!
  2. OK, not bothering with any more houses on City Road opposite the cemetry to avoid any more hassle as we went to school with several people who lived down there lets move on (these houses all have date stones between about 1900 and 1920, but most just carry a name rather than a date) Manor Lane Junior School, 1876 Many old Junior schools, especially ones like this which have seperate entrances for Girls & Infants and another one for Boys of Victorian origin were built just after the 1870 Education Act presumably to allow local authorities to comply with the act which made "compulsory education of all children" and was to be done "regardless of social status" implyying that the education was to be provided by the state and would be free of charge. Similar schools of similar age in the area are Ann's Road Heeley and Gleadless School at Hollinsend. Having said that my grandmother, who went to school in the early 1900's, always said she had to take a penny to school every morning to pay for her lessons. A penny was a lot of money to poor families with lots of school age children. If she turned up without her penny she was sent home for the day! More recently my mother in the 1930's claims to have gone to the "ragged arsed" school, - a reference to the old ragged schools which actually predated my mum by a fair amount of time but which as the name implies (and as my mums version of the name also implies) were schools for the poor who could not afford to pay for their own education.

    Sheffield Supertram

Now I would love to see the 1974 promotional film that introduced the idea of the Supertram when the idea was first considered. It showed scenes of Sheffield streets along the proposed route with this moving green trail to represent the as yet unknown design of the Supertram. There are scenes of this green trail moving up City Road and through the Norfolk Park Estate (remember all 1974 vintage, so would just love to see it for that) In one scene, the green trail (Supertram) leaves the road and cuts across a field heading for a gap in the hedge, it goes through the gap and changes direction slightly up a slight hill in the next field. This scene kept me guessing where it was for 20 years until the Supertram was finally built and the animated simulation became a reality. It was the section on the way out to halfway just beyond the Old Harrow pub where the tram leaves Whites Lane and cuts over the fields to its next stop at Birley. I originally saw this film on Calendar News on Yorkshire TV, but if it exists in the public domain and on the Internet I would love to see it here.

    Slayleigh Lane

Interesting, I thought it might have something to do with murder and that there may have been a link to the stocks on Whitely Lane. Never mind.

    Tram Locations

Looks like the top of Parkside Road again, this time looking across to the bottom of Wadsley Lane. Also note that the tram is 189, one of the surviving trams at Crich Tramway Museum.

That'll be George William Gillott (living at 60 Broomgrove Road 1911 and 1919) and Edmund Arnold Gillott (living at 72 Chelsea Road 1911, 1919 and 1925) trading as William Gillott & Son, Pearl Cutters. Also Listed just as : W Gillott & Son, Pearl cutters, 38 Arundel Street in 1919 W Gillott & Son, Pearl cutters, 17 & 21 Eyre Lane [Would need to get some DOB records to work out if Edmund was a brother or the son]

    Manor Road names

Fairleigh is a "fairleigh" strange road. It consists of 2 roundabouts with a short stretch of road between them. Both the road and the roundabouts carry the same name. The road itself is 2 dual carriageway stretches seperated by a central island which forms a small park area with a path through it. Each dual carriageway stretch is one way as would be expected. The upper roundabout is joined by Windyhouse Lane and Wulfric Road, both previously mentioned as well as being the site of the now restored and rebuilt St. Swithens church. There are a few shops around this roundabout like this sandwich shop, "Fairleigh Sandwiches" Depending upon who has made them and what with they could be called "Hardleigh sandwiches" , or if they sold other stuff as well like soft drinks they could be called "Mainleigh sandwiches" The lower roundabout straddles Prince of Wales Road, but the half of it on the other side of Prince, along with all the other streets there, has been demolished and what is left of the roads has been blocked off. This lower roundabout is joined by Cullabine Road, now there's another unusual Manor road name, - Cullabine Not "colourblind", meaning an inability to see the world in full glorious technicolour and not "calomine", an ointment made of oxide and carbonate of zinc to treat itchy rashes, - as in the song "poison ivy" I wonder what "Cullabine means? Another one for Bayleaf to look up in "the Oracle's" book perhaps

Two chip shops within a few yards of each other, Staggered opening times to avoid direct competition I bet you were never short of a bag of chips down Manor lane then did the 2 chip shops also run a "price fixing" agreement between them so that they both charged exactly the same price. <_<

Wouldn't have thought so, but we don't know when Gillott's gave up the Eyre Ln premises. Furnival St is a fair way from Howard Ln. A search on here for Gillott didn't come up with anything pearl related, W. Gillott and Son, 17-21 Eyre Lane, picturesheffield; 01 - s10194 02 - s10184, 1950 decade

    Sharrow Lane School.

I went to Sharrow Lane in the Late 70's to 1982. When I finished 4th year my family and I moved to the States. I remember Mr .Rigby, Mr. Warburton, Mrs. Close, Mr. Blackwell and Mrs. Alflat. I dont remember too many of my class mates. I do remember Lee Adams, Racky Hyacinth, Anthony Stewart, Robert Scanlon and Delia Matis. I am surprised that the school is closing...I went back to the school in 2002 and it had not changed that much. My visit brought back lots of memories of playing football in the school yard.

    Trolleybuses

Mr Moore`s report on Tramway replacement was submitted on 28th March, 1951. The position had now been reached when within the city area there were only 17 tram routes and 26 full-day bus routes being operated, although the trams still carried 64% of the passengers concerned. Taking the basis of a 30 year life for the trams, between 1951 and 1956 48 new cars would be needed, followed by 120 and 125 in each of the following five year periods. It was agreed that the required tram fleet, then 410 cars, could be replaced by an equal number of buses. Trolley-buses were considered, it being noted that comparative costs were now in favour of diesel buses. The report was accepted, with a changeover period which would not be completed until 1st April 1966, with the closure of the route from Wadsley Bridge to city. It was proposed that the first route to be converted, on 1st October, 1951, should be that from Fulwood via Hunters Bar to Malin Bridge, leaving the section along Holme Lane to the depot in use. `Sheffield Transport` by Chas. C Hall, page 261.

Thanks only me, so now I have sorted out which one was Vineys. But 2 fish and chip shops within 100yards of each other on adjacent corners on Manor Lane. Presumably they weren't both there at the same time as the other one appears to still be trading as a fish and chip shop but I can't remember it being there years ago when Vineys was open.

  25. Hi, We (collectively) know the following Pubs existed, we even have an opening year for some of them. However, all of these have one thing in common, we, currently have no information regarding a Landlord/Landlady or "Keeper" of any kind; without names to associate they are just buildings that were around in year "WXYZ". Any information relating to these Pubs from any source, Trade Directory, Alphabetical listings, Year Books, Rates, Census gratefully received. It's not all gloom and doom, the 312 Pubs on this list are falling; I'm just abount to complete a 1901 listing and then it's on to an 1881 listing, further keepers will come to light; the 312 represent 16% of the total list. As before, I've split then down alphabetically "A" Pubs Name, Address, Opening Year if known Acorn 20 Burton Road Adam and Eve 17 Balaclava Street African Prince Lambert Street 1774 Albany Hotel Fargate/Surrey Street 1889 Albion 2 Ellesmere Road Albion 23 Adsett Street 1860 Albion 26 Oxford Street Alexandra 23 Dover Street Alexandra 91 Dunlop Street Amateur's Rest 17 Holly Street Anchor 20 Pea Croft 1833 Angler's Rest 15 Snow Lane 1833 Artillery Man 7 Bridge Street 1833 Ashberry 1 Ashberry Street
