    File Cutter

Hi Mick I was at a talk last night given by two people from the Hawley Collection. Their brief is to widen public knowledge and use of the collection, and one thing they mentioned was that if anyone had a query about tools, toolmaking or a trade, especially Sheffield related, they are welcome to contact them and they'll supply whatever information they can. Might be worth giving them a try? There's a link on the Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust site, or email for the people doing the talk is audiences@simt.co.uk On the subject of file-cutting, this is from the Hunter Archaeological Society Transactions, by kind permission of the Society AN OLD PICTORIAL CUT FILE. An exhibit of considerable local interest, in more ways than one, was on view at the Open Meeting of the Society held an December, 1944, through the kindness of Mr. Riley M. Carr, of the old established firm of J. & Riley Carr, File Manufacturers, of Bailey Lane Works, whose records go back at least to the year 1810. This took the form of a hand-cut file, some 11 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, cut with file teeth by hand on both sides, and, as will be seen from the excellent photograph taken of it by Mr. W. F. Northend, which is here reproduced - a slide from which was shown at the meeting - was cut for the firm in the year 1839.
  2. Didn't know him personally but I remember watching him along with all the other greats of his day, Len Allchurch, Billy Hodgson, Doc Pace, Joe Shaw, Gerry Summers etc etc. The names roll off the tongue because the team hardly changed from year to year. I remember him as a fierce competitor and he was the first player I ever saw sent off at Bramall Lane. It was in the first half of the game, my friend and I had never seen anyone sent off before and we were sure he would come back on in the second half! He's definitely remembered with affection by this Blades supporter.

spot on 100%, it would have ended around there. I managed to get through to the school but they have relocated to spring lane college whilst this work is being carried out. the lady says that the school and grounds are being refurbished and they dont expect to be back in the building until september 2010. Someone is phoning me back today about gaining access inside the school but they are very doubtful anyone will be able to get in whilst the refurbishment is being carried out. will keep you posted.

    What type of bus?

I also, with my family, used the buses between Cayton Bay and Scarborough in the 1950's. Perhaps you were staying at Wallis's Holiday Camp ? I have very fond memories of the place with its rustic fencing leading up from the main road and beds of Marigolds brightening the place up. The owner had a flash american aluminium caravan just inside the gate. Milk was obtained from the farm just over the lane and came in wide-necked bottles with a cardboard disk closure. I can still smell the wonderful aroma in the little coffee bar, ( and the not so nice smell of the toilet blocks). Eventually the the new club was built next door, all swept away now in the road widening. Perhaps we should have a Wallis's thread on the forum, there must be many people with happy memories ?

    Malin Bridge, does anyone know...?

Indeed. Trams never went beyond the Malin Bridge terminus at the end of Holme Lane. This doesn't mean that extensions to Stannington weren't contemplated at some time. Many schemes were contemplated over the years, which never made it to parliamentary bills, let alone being authorised. One plan in the early part of last century involved trolleybuses running from Malin Bridge along Rivelin Valley Road, and in the twenties Ridgeway Road was built wide enough for a tramway to be laid on a reservation, which never happened.

  14. Hi All I am writing a story about my great grandfather, Albert Edward Bird who was born in Sheffield in august 1846. He lived intially in Pea Croft then moved to Arundel Lane in 1850 and later Pond Street in 1856. I would like to know more about the education he may have received, size of classes and also what schools may have been in the areas in which he lived. Albert was brought to Australia in 1869 to run professionally, after a very successful amateur and professional career in England. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. regards John B Melbourne Australia

Richard. Crookes and Crookes Road are not one in the same. Crookes Road runs from Broomhill to just before The Grindstone at the junction with Lydgate Lane. The name then changes to Crookes until somewhere just past the top of Springvale Rd. where it becomes Northfield Rd.

Been past on the tram today and from the tennis courts all the way up to the fence on spring lane it is fenced off and there are diggers digging up the ground where the old bridge was located. They have also finally cut the grass on the school field (the horse was still on there though!). if i get chance on the way home i will take a photo and upload tomorrow

    Sheffield Supertram

Green? - the trams have been grey, predominantly white and predominantly blue, but surely they have never been green Seriously, I would like to see the film as well - I wonder if there are any differences between the route on the film and what actually happened. Looking through the South Yorkshire Light Rail Transit Act 1988, which covered the Middlewood/Malin Bridge to Halfway/Herdings Park route, I note the following differences: At Malin Bridge it was intended to have a single track loop, one way along Holme Lane to the Stannington Road junction, the other way along Loxley New Road The original plan was for the tramway to run via Wulfric Road, Fairleigh and Prince of Wales Road to Manor Top. It was subsequently necessary to get another act of parliament to change this to the actual route built along City Road. A few pictures of the early days of the system can be seen here For any insomniacs, the acts of parliament can be downloaded from here: http://www.england-legislation.hmso.gov.uk...s/localact1988a http://www.england-legislation.hmso.gov.uk...s/localact1989a http://www.england-legislation.hmso.gov.uk...s/localact1990a http://www.england-legislation.hmso.gov.uk...s/localact1993a

    The Ponds

Hi, I am looking for information about The Ponds, which existed in the area of Pond Street, Pond Lane etc. The only reference I can find to them is in a book by John Edward which says: "The Ponds existed to provide waterpower to a number of mills," but The Ponds feature on very early historical maps, before there were any mills. Does anyone know if The Ponds were man-made or natural and if they had any purpose before the mills arrived?
