    Dixon Lane

Hi In 1881 my 3* gt gd father Samuel Ibberson b abt 1807 is shown as living in 14 Dixon Lane and he is manager of iron steel depot. According to his grave record he was Manager steel warehouse and died at 14 1/2 Dickson Lane. Which is the correct spelling now and then? Does anyone have any idea where the steel depot was? Thanks Helene
  3. Does anyone know anything about and/or has a photo of a War Memorial in a school on Psalter Lane? My dad seems to think one of his relatives (Higginbottom) is mentioned but he couldnt be anymore specific and I cant find anything on google or on any thread in the forum.
  4. Hello, My grandfather died apparently in a hospital/hospice on Lydgate Lane. 'Once you went to Lydgate Lane you never go home' was the bleak expression used once admitted. This would have been around 1940ish. It was specifically for chest and lung diseases. Can anyone give me a link to map of this area so that I can look for likely premises. It is an old relative who told me whose memory is faded. Could he be thinking of the Thornbury Hospital? Sorry the details are so vague but that's all that I was given to work on. Many thanks for looking.

  10. Wincobank Picture Palace, Merton Lane. - http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/zo...jpgh/s21397.jpg The Wincobank Picture Palace opened in June 1914. Of brick construction, the frontage was of terracotta with stone facings. Steep steps led up to an entrance with a mosiac tiled floor. Seating capacity was 550. The projection room was at first floor level and housed a single Butcher's No.12 projector which was hand cranked. Unusually, electricity for lighting was provided by a gas engine, as mains electricity was not available until 1921. Some alterations and improvements were made in 1919 which included redecoration, but it was to be some seven years before the Palace was closed for two weeks during which time a balcony was added and the pay-box was repositioned. Refurbishment and redecoration was also carried out at this time. The addition of the balcony increased the seating capacity by around 100. By the mid 1920s, musical accompaniment was being provided by a trio of, a pianist, violinist and either a trumpeter or drummer. In 1930, a Western Electric sound system was installed for the changeover to talkies. The Palace was normally closed for the last week in July to allow for staff holidays at a time when business was slack due to the Sheffield 'works weeks' holidays. In August 1953 the hall was closed for a week to allow for modernisation work. This included re-modeling the proscenium arch, improvements to lighting and ventilation, and the installation of a modern pay-box. The first film in CinemaScope, "The Robe" * was screened in March of 1955. The Palace closed in February 1960 having seen it's sister theatre, the Tinsley Palace, close just 12 months earlier. Review of The Robe from IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046247/ Info: Sheffield Cinemas.
  11. This bridge or tramway brought coal into the depot from the Nunnery Colliery, I managed to find the tunnel entrance on Worthing Rd, an abutmentto the bridge on the canal tow path across from the pallet yard and a stone pier on Effingham Rd opposite the gate to the pallet yard. Would welcome any info or pics of the structure.
  12. Any info on the house or the gate house please ? I know it was a Naval Cadette training base , where has the old boforse gun gone?, but has it past naval links, who built it and when ? Also the playing fields in front of it , what are they built on i.e. gardens or the remains of mine workings, as I have seen large issues of water spring up from the bank sides in front of the old wood at the side, after very heavy rain fall.

  18. Hi, Can anyone give me more info about an Orphanage in Lydgate Lane please. I have it mentioned on the 1901 Census where Geroge Frederick Hanson (b.1892) and his sister Lucy Mabel Hanson (b.1893) were living after their father had died. What is it's location in conection to No 6 Lydgate Lane where the children's mother had lived as a girl in 1871 please ?

  20. Not sure of the year for this photo, pre 1974 as I believe they were building the South Stand then.
  21. Looking at the pictures on picture Sheffield, I found a few that piqued my curiosity. There is a picture of the Great Yorkshire show, Coal Aston Aerodrome ( http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/pi...ff.refno=u03685 ), showing a large area, apparently nothing like, or near the place at the top of Dyche lane. There are some other aerial photos of the site, and the implication ( http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/pi...ff.refno=s15316 ) is that it occupied space to the South East of the Norton Hotel, around what is now Gilders and Meadowhead college, and not what I would call Coal Aston at all. Another photo shows a Vickers Vimy there - and a search then turned up this: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/vie...20-%201020.html Does anyone know more about: The Aerodrome - it appears to still have had some purpose in 1920 ( http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/written...aston-aerodrome ), it wasn't a small site and can't have been secret, so why don't we know more? or The visit of these flight pioneers to Sheffield?
