  1. ....just thought i'd mention that the old Vineys Shop premises , which is now a private home is currently up for sale ! This place used to be a well known and invaluble place for the locals and was open daily till 10pm , till its closure around the mid 80's. Although i popped in reguarly , i can still remember the old Dad who helped out , and Mike Viney , one of two sons, who always wore a jumper or t-shirt with the Blades logo on , and how the building was painted red and white as they were all big Blades fans ! I also remember it being one of the first shops to sell the new "Slush Puppie" ice drinks in the late 70's. Heres the ad .... http://bit.ly/fWEv7g

  4. As I passed the Hallamshire Hotel on Lydgate lane today, I noticed that it is to be demolished to make way for houses and appartments, on closer inspection there is a single story building behind the pub that looks much older than the actual pub, I know there was a quarry and ropeworks close by and wonder if this building could be a remnant from those days, does anyone have a pre 1900s map that shows the area? The Pub is on the junction of lydgate lane and Rygate Crescent.
  5. FALL IN THE PRICE OF COAL. The demand for house coal at Sheffield is extremely slack, and the agents of several of the collieries have reduced their prices to the extent of from 1s. 6d. to 2s 6d. per ton. The opinion entertained by many agents is that by Spring, fuel will be comparatively cheap. http://www.cultrans.com/

    The Grapes Trippett Lane

What's this I hear , no more live music at the Grapes. Surely the Grapes is not closing too or is it just the live music that has folded. Does anyone know anymore details?

  9. http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s13708&pos=1&action=zoom&id=16566 The shop on the right was Jack archer's, as kids we often went in for footy boots and kit. It would have stood across from where the petrol station is now on Bramall lane. I can also recall they repaired air guns and rifles. I was told he also provided uniteds kit? Does anyone know the history behind the shop and owner?
  10. I am trying to find out when my ancestor Thomas Glossop lived at the Sheffield Boys Working Home in Broomspring Lane Sheffield circa 1897. I know he started working at Warby's Grocers in 1898 and was in the home before then but do not know when. Are there any way I can see a list of the boys living there, were registers or records kept, or even annual reports and are they still available? Help would be appreciated either ingformation or advice. PopT

  12. Hi there folks, could anyone possibly tell me if I'm right on this one please. I'm looking at the 1871 census for head of household, William Bancroft. (His daughter Eliza is my Great Great Grandmother, she married Henry Rolley.) The address is Shude Lane, Forge Yard, Sheffield. I've found Shude Hill and what was Ponds Forge on google maps and on the 1800s map I've found Shude Hill and The Ponds. So, on the 1800s map, would one of the little side streets off Shude Hill be Shude Lane? Also, on Eliza Bancrofts birth certificate, the address is given as Forge Yard, Forge Lane. Sub-district of South Sheffield. Is this roughly all the same place? Thanks for any info or verification. Doris..
  13. my family, the Richardsons, moved from Misson Nottinghamshire in the 1870s and are listed in the 1881 census as living at 7 Harvest Lane. Does anyone have any information about Harvest Lane?
  14. One of my family worked as a miner for the Barber Walker Coal Company in the 1920's. Can anyone give me a potted history of the company and what happened to it. For some unknown reason he left mining in 1928 to join up in the army and unfortunately was killed in the air raids on Malta in 1942. Any information about the company would be appreciated. PopT

    Wheats Lane

So, no-one told me about Wheats Lane in Paradise Square then ? Keeping secrets, huh ? Important resident judging by the name and a plaque on the wall to a well known Doctor with Victoria connections ? Who are these people please ? Remarkable little lane with a great building on the end, dog-walkers give it a go.
  17. In a sl worn limp back leather notebook : A unique and interesting item, this is an 1870 manuscript valuation of some coal pits around the Sheffield area, carried out by G B Forster of Backworth, Newcastle on Tyne. On 28 single sided pages, and addressed to Benjamin Huntsman Esq, he says that: In compliance with your request, I have made an examination of your Sheffield Tinsley Collieries and have obtained the necessary information as to the costs of working and sale price to enable me to report on and value the same. The collieries are Sheffield, Tinsley, West Retford. The rest of the lined exercise book is blank. This is a highly detailed valuation by a skilled hand and mind - there ius considerable local detail supporting his calculations, regarding colliery railways and the like, local markets etc. A valuable local history item and also for anyone interested in the history of coal mines. Link Starting at £75, too rich for my blood, 0 bids, no bidding, 1.5 hours left.
  18. I can't find if this has been discussed before. Coal Pit Lane, now Cambridge Street. Presumably it was called Coal Pit Lane for a reason (although the 1771 Fairbanks plan gives the alternative Cow Pit Lane). So, where was the coal pit?

    101 Green Lane

In the list of pubs with no known keepers we have the Foundry Arms at 101 Green Lane. In the list of beerhouse keepers we have William Allen at 101 Green Lane. So I put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5 (keepers that is, though no mention of the name Foundry): 1881 (Census) Grocer's shop 1891 (Census) Joseph Baker, Railway Drayman, Sailte Yorkshire Beer House (Green Lane) 1893 (Kelly's) Thomas Moore, Shopkeeper & beer retailer (101 Green Lane) 1901 (Census) Samuel Clark, Inn Keeper, Wharncliffe Inn (101 Green Lane) 1905 (White's) William Henry Cooper, beerhouse (101 Green Lane) 1911 (Census) Herbert Allen, Publican, Wharncliffe Inn (101 Green Lane) 1911 (White's) Herbert Allen, beerhouse (101 Green Lane)
  20. Looking at the Chequers or Old Cow (Beerhouse) posting, I think that these are two different places. White's 1833 directory has: Jane Alsop, vict. Chequers, 43 Coalpit Lane John Renwick, Old Cow beerhouse, 64 Coalpit Lane The 1837 directory also has: Jane Alsop, vict. Chequers, 43 Coalpit Lane John Renwick, beerhouse, 64 Coalpit Lane But then, Robson's 1839 directory has: A. Alsop, Beer Retailer, 64 Coalpit Lane Jno. Renwick, pen & pocket knife manufacturer & beer retailer, 12 Coalpit Lane It looks that Coalpit Lane was renumbered between 1837 and 1839; #43 became #64, and #64 became #12

A few months ago a road with an identical name was in the news in Barlborough, which set me thinking about the one in this part of the world that links Fulwood Rd with Hallamshire Rd - where does the name come from? Any ideas.
