HughW
Reprinted in the Independent 13 May 1854, from a leaflet published by James Montgomery. (Montgomery's funeral had taken place a few days previously.) The Feemasons and their flummery at the head of the procession. All those sick clubs. Start at the church finish at a pub. Interesting also for the streets mentioned on the route. China Square?

HughW
"Good question and Cheney Square wasn't a square ... long, thin place with an opening at either end - a road even ..." [odd ... true though this is, I didn't write it- Hugh] So is that two China Squares, or was the original idea about Paradise Square wrong? Certainly the Procession document did not mean Paradise Square.
HughW
In another of Leader's articles about old street names he states his preference for 'Pot Square' as an alternative to the 'inappropriate' Paradise Square. edit Sheffield Indexers has the 1787 Directory entries for China Square - they include three victuallers. RichardB
Can't really fault the location ... no pubs known on Cheney Square but this pre dates ... one to ponder on some more.
