RLongden
I'm sure they mean Walkley (even though it's not), but here's the web page: http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t07566&pos=47&action=zoom&id=99609 I reckon this was on Middlewood Road, 35-37, bang opposite Proctor Place and next door to Hillsborough Records at 33, whose shop front you can see on the extreme left of the picture? https://www.google.com/maps/@53.4034655,-1.5027332,3a,75y,226.4h,81.73t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1smHqsKnE_wo4ZevKhGiWizA!2e0 Taking a street view shot of today and framing the original photo as close as possible, you can make out the kink in the left hand side of the front windows and the upstairs windows too (the right one in the old photo with the 'For Sale / To Let' sign nailed into it?! Notwithstanding the Audi 80 in the way (which means the photo cannot be earlier than 1991 - Audi 80/B4 variant = 1991-2 MY), it looks like one and the same building. Does anyone agree? Differ? Pity there's no apparent way of emailing the folk at PS to suggest the location? Or maybe it's just a case of emailing archives@sheffield.gov.uk? It's not very clear..... History dude
I believe that you do use that email address for information that can be added. Don't forget to include the picture details you are referring to!
RLongden
Thanks History Dude. I did just that and got a very nice reply from a lady called Cheryl, who told me they would update the photo details on their database asap. Seems worthwhile browsing through the 'waifs and strays' on PS, in case anywhere or anything rings a bell and we can help fill in some details? ukelele lady
Maybe if you could check some address directory for the 1990s and look up the Bali Discount shop then you would know for sure if this was Middlewood road. I once contacted the local studies with a picture that was wrongly named and I shown the girl at the archives the address of a certain bank in the picture which fitted with the address in the Sheffield Directory and she then changed the title but they do need proof or they would be changing them at everyone's whim. I don't know what year the tram lines went down on Middlewood road but there's none there on the picture. Could it be South road perhaps?
RLongden
That's a very good point about the tram tracks, as it further narrows the date between 1992 and 1995, as the photo on PS shows the tracks under construction in 1995: http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t01315&pos=289&action=zoom&id=31765 The opening dates for this section were..... 23 October 1995: Shalesmoor to Middlewood/Malin Bridge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertram_%28Sheffield%29 Using the zoomed image of the above PS shot and zooming in as far as possible, looking a the buildings behind first lamppost on the left hand side of the road. Going up Middlewood Road, the first white frontage with red writing looks like Staniforths the bakery, the second looks like the yellow of Hillsborough Records and the third is the dark red, with white writing and border of the Bali Discount Store (albeit too pixelated to read). Also, looking in the farthest upstairs window of that building, the sign is also visible, which is shown in the original shot.......... or is that just wishful thinking? RLongden
p.s. I looked down South Road, Walkley (on Street View) and all the shops appear to be stone fronted, rather than white painted brick, as in the original photo? Also, If you look again at the photo, the phone number for Hillsborough Records is clear... 333449. This was a Hillsborough prefix (when Sheffield was 0742) and I believe they only had one branch, in Hillsborough? http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t07566&pos=47&action=zoom&id=99609 Maybe not conclusive proof, but I'd have a tenner on it! RLongden
I've drawn a blank with a business directory for 35-37 Middlewood Road 1992-1995, but I found another image on PS, which shows the front of the building again and probably the new owners? "Simply the Best" looks like a general housewares shop, with plastic 'planter' tubs stacked outside and various stuff in the window. This is May 1996 and the tram tracks are down and the pavement outside has been re-laid. The thing to note is the characteristic shop frontage with the little square bays at either side, the double windows on the left and the double entrance doors. Above the doors are two louvres openers..... the same in each photo? 1996: http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s27015&pos=460&action=zoom&id=29429 1992-1995: http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t07566&pos=47&action=zoom&id=99609 Anyway, moving on................. life's too short! RLongden
Just to update and close out this topic, the email address to use when sending information on unknown images to Picture Sheffield is: localstudies.library@sheffield.gov.uk The original image that started this topic has now been moved out of the 'unknown' folder and I even got a credit in the narrative......... which is nice! Bayleaf
Following the interweb address on the flower bowl next door, the website says 33 Middlewood Rd
