Kevan
Sheffield Independent 7 May 1908 Sheffield Licenses The Compensation List The Compensation Authority for the City of Sheffield met yesterday to decide the question of the renewal of a number of licenses. The following was the list of cases: Club Mill, Smithfield, Henry Short Red Lion, Smithfield, Eleanor Drabble Ball, Furnace Hill, John Daprato City Arms, Eyre Street, Emily Wostenholm Red Lion, Cambridge Street, Wm Lyon Cooke Lincolnshire Arms, Broad Lane, Wm R Kirk Red Place tavern, Garden Street, Robert Kelshaw Old House at Home, Radford Street, H H Bramall Kitcheners Rest, St Philips Road, Walter Bennett Rocket Inn, St Philips Road, Benjamin Davies Halfway House, Netherthorpe Place, Walter meakin Rose and Crown, Sudbury Street, John parkin The Royal, Shalesmoor, Herbert B Nix Sawmakers Arms, Burnt Tree Lane, George Hall Beerhouse, 86 Hoyle Street, Joseph Glaves Harp Inn, Morpeth Street, Walter Howson Havelock Arms, Allen Street, John Fishlock Britannia Tavern, Shepherd Street, Thomas H Haseltine Anchor Hotel, Shepherd Street, Joe Woodhouse Eagle and Child, Smithfield, Elizabeth E Wallis Anglers Rest, Snow Lane, Thomas Morgan New Union, Furnace Hill, Edgar Bywater Yeomanry Arms, Arundel Street, Emma E Parkin Forge tavern, Pond Hill, Thomas Atherton Kings Head, Martin Street, Henry Bailey Gardeners Rest, 55 Townhead Street, Thomas Hession Opposition was forthcoming in the cases of the City Arms, Eyre Street; the Red Lion, Cambridge Street; the Lincolnshire Arms, Broad Lane; the Old House at Home, Radford Street; The Royal, Shalesmoor; the Sawmakers Arms, Burnt Tree Lane; the Yeomanry Arms, Arundel Street; the Britannia Tavern, Shepherd Street; and the Anglers Rest, Snow Lane. The City Arms, Eyre Street, owned by Scarsdale Brewery Co Ltd. The license was transferred to Emily Wostenholm in February, 1906. A small, full licensed house and much improved by the tenant. The takings amounted to about £30 a week. License renewed. #Red Lion, Cambridge Street. owned by Messrs J L Cockayne and Sons, or the Sheffield Hippodrome Ltd, the licensee being William Lyne Cooke. It was stated that the house was unsuitable and had been considered on two previous occasions. It was stated the present house cost a matter of £3000, and doing a turnover of four figures. Case left outstanding #The Lincolnshire Arms, Broad Lane, owned by Messrs Henry Tomlinson Ltd, current licensee a William Robert Kirk. In 1905, there was a trade of £587 in draught beers, in 1906 - £676, and in 1907 the trade was £620. A suggestion that with the level of trade, and another house opposite was on thw list, the licence might be renewed. But the house was deemd unsuitable. The kitchen was the only living room, and the tap room and dram shop were both very low and dark. Application refused. #The Old House at Home, Radford Street owned by Messrs John Richdale and Co Ltd. The reason for being on the list was that the kitchen was not big enough and was the only living room: the structire of the house was very unsatisfactory, and the licensee had stated that the house did not pay, and seemed to get worse. It was suggested it may well to either pull down or burn down. The house went onto the compensation list. the place. And more. kevan
