A Very Merry and Joyous Christmas to all at Sheffield History from Mr. & Mrs. Hilldweller.

The cupboards and the freezers are full, the heatings turned up and the car is cosy in the garage. If it ever warms up we might set foot outside again, probably around July

All the Best to Everyone.

Happy Bull Week to one and all.

----------------------

Trust me to go all history and not provide an image ...

Bull Week ?????

Bull Week, my dad always went on about Bull Weeks

He worked in the cutlery Industry on piece work, so the week before a holiday he would produce more stuff and hence earn more money for his holiday.

He would also in the weeks running up to a bull week do a little extra and save the work to claim it on Bull Week

You need to keep that electric charriot of yours cosy in the garage as well.

With record low temperatures outside lead-acid accumulators (car batteries) very quickly lose their charge as I am sure you are well aware.

Wonder what problems we will be facing in weather like this when the Government has convinced us all to use Electric cars for environmental reasons?

Having said that, - the old electric milk floats never seemed to have much trouble.

My chariot is cosy in it's own wooden garage, there isn't room in the other one for it.

I put the battery on charge for a day each month through the winter months. The charger is a microprocessor controlled, switched-mode jobby and shuts down when the battery is charged. According to the t'internet a fully charged battery doesn't freeze until the temperature drops to minus 92 degrees F. 'so we should be OK at the moment.

Our local milkman used an electric float until a couple of years ago, but his round was now too big to get round in it.

As an apprentice I worked at a factory that made hundreds of milk float motors a year, mostly 72/80 volt series motors and I spent a boring few months testing the things.

If the snow goes and the roads are dry I might get wrapped up warm and venture out on it before long.

My chariot I mean, not the milkman's milk float lol lol

According to the t'internet a fully charged battery doesn't freeze until the temperature drops to minus 92 degrees F. 'so we should be OK at the moment.

The loss of charge isn't to do with the battery freezing as the concentration of the sulphuric acid prevents it from freezing until it reaches the temperature you mention.

However, as it is a solution of acid in water then as the temperature drops the mobility of ions in the solution drops. As it is the ions (electrically charged particles) which carry the charge through the battery the loss in mobility means that at low temperature even a fully charged battery will not be able to deliver as much charge as a warmer one.

Technical explanations aside, most cases of electrical battery failure in vehicles happens in cold winter months (according to the AA) and even ordinary dry batteries, for example in a torch, can be made to last a bit longer by keeping them warm.

A very Merry Christmas to all. I cannot make a card like some on here but the posted picture is my favourite Sheffield Christmas one. It brings back so many memories of childhood Christmas shopping ventures.

It a great picture anyway mickjj ;-)

Notice its taken looking up haymarket and not down it towards Waingate.

There are members on here who think the view downwards to the market is an eyesore and can't wait to have it demolished. :(

A very special personal Christmas message..

Thought provoking poem!!

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,

HE LIVED ALL ALONE,

IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE,

MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY,

WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,

AND TO SEE JUST WHO,

IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,

A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,

NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,

NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,

JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,

ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES,

OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,

AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,

A SOBER THOUGHT,

CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,

IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,

I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,

ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,

SILENT, ALONE,

CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR,

IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,

THE ROOM IN DISORDER,

NOT HOW I PICTURED,

A TRUE BRITISH SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO,

OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?

CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,

THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALISED THE FAMILIES,

THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,

OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS,

WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,

THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,

AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE,

A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM,

EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,

BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,

LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER,

HOW MANY LAY ALONE,

ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE,

IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT,

A TEAR TO MY EYE,

I DROPPED TO MY KNEES,

AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED,

AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,

"SANTA DON'T CRY,

THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,

I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,

MY LIFE IS MY GOD,

MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,

AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,

I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,

I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,

SO SILENT AND STILL,

AND WE BOTH SHIVERED,

FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE,

ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,

THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR,

SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,

WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,

WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,

IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,

AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,

AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

This poem was written by a Peacekeeping soldier stationed overseas.
