Petrol Stations In Sheffield.

Plans to build a block of apartments on the Texaco petrol station site on Ecclesall Road are to be considered this week. If approved that will be another competitor less for the supermarkets to worry about. When I started motoring in the early 1960s Sheffield had filling stations in abundance, from Sparkes Motors at the bottom of Snig Hill to Niagra Garage at the end of Claywheels Lane [a distance of no more than 4 miles] there were at least 14 to choose from. What about the one in Crookes nearest to you vox will that be next ? W/E.

I hope not. If it goes the next nearest is Bramhall Lane or a Supermarket

I won't give supermarkets my money unless I have no other option (as I've said before more than once) but I won't have any other option soon.

As a child, still petol rationing then, no doubt, I can remember Mr Sedgewick at the top of perhaps City Road. Two and six a gallon comes into mind, I can remember Granny complaining her rides to Ringinglow would cost more.

It must be six or seven years since the Texaco station was open on Ecclesall Rd, hardly a loss of competition now for anyone.

In terms of remembering old stations though, the first one I remember was an independant on Worcester Rd directly opposite Worcester Drive and now four detached houses. It had a couple of fuel pumps a very small office and a repair shed with car lift where the owner repaired cars. I can still smell the oil?

Another site now long gone is Sandygate Motors next door to the Plough Inn on Sandygate Rd. I bought my first car from there :)

It reads as though its the Texaco near the bottom of Greystones Road.

Makes me wonder,

who was the first major company to distribute petrol in Sheffield,

I remember Shell, Jet, BP and Esso, were there any others,

and who would have been the first, and in what year ?

I bet Skeets will have a good idea

That's the one WE. The plan is to build on the petrol station and the piece of land next to it.

529 Ecclesall Road is under investigation by Sheffield Council for repeatedly opening later than its permitted hours. Meanwhile, plans to build a new block of apartments further up Ecclesall Road at the Texaco petrol station are also set to be considered today. If the development is given the go-ahead as recommended, two commercial units would be built on the ground floor with 10 apartments, in two storeys above. In their report to councillors, city planners say: "The quality of the design and appearance is considered to be good, with contemporary shop units with a predominant material of stone at the Ecclesall Road frontage". I think it's still Ecclesall Rd Mike, Ecclesall Rd South starts higher up. According to today's Sheffield Telegraph they're not planning to build on the Texaco station as originally planned, just the empty plot between the Texaco and the shops higher up.

I remember the one on Manchester Rd at Crosspool when it was a petrol station, (now it's just a service garage), had a sign on the wall facing town which said 'Last petrol for 35 miles'.

Texaco [star] Banner Cross Garage. 850 Ecclesall Road. 0114 2638200. I seem to remember a car park where the empty plot was, and a row of shops/houses before that. W/E.

I understand that Esso used to trade as Pratt's until the 1930's. They were part of the Anglo American Oil Company. In my youth there were still a few old pumps and enamel signs around on old garage premises. I understand that Pratt's was distributed from a small dump at Calver Sough where the Climbing shop is now.

There was also a cheaper brand called ROP that my old uncle used to talk about, I understand that it stood for Russian Oil Products.

The old smithy at the previous Admiral Rodney used to dispense petrol from a non electric pump. The garage man pumped the petrol using a semi-rotary hand-pump into a glass container up to a marker and then opened a tap allowing the petrol to flow out by gravity.

A school pal of mine had a Saturday morning job there and was responsible for letting a tanker driver dump hundreds of gallons of 4 star in the 2 star tank. That was the end of his job experience.

That's interesting about Pratt's - we found an enamel sign with that written on it in blue (badly damaged) in the valley below the scout hut and were trying to find out a bit about it without any luck. I have a picture of it somewhere so I shall try and find it.

A 1965 English Petroleum publicity shot.

This time its a promotion for JET petrol, and its fair crying out for a caption.

I remember going with my dad to a filling station on either Worcester rd or Peterborough Road at Lodge Moor, it was only a small station with a couple of pumps, but dad had a business account there.

Sorry MIke, missed this bit of your post.

Does this relate to the Texaco petrol station above Napoleans casino?

Petrol stations were an early target for the CPRE. After pressure from them, the Council considered the proliferation of advertisements alongside roads, and the City Engineer asked the City Council's Improvement Committee for suggestions for proposed bye-laws for petrol filling stations. After modification they were approved in 1934. They not only controlled the design and siting of petrol stations within the city boundary, but in certain areas prohibited them completely.

The CPRE continued pressure about roadside advertisements, and in 1935 the west Riding accepted their recommendations about roadside advertising in the parts of the Peak District that fell within the county. The result was a ban covering the whole of the Strines Road, and parts of the Moscar, Langsett and Woodhead roads. Sheffield Council also extended the ban to cover the Owler Bar road, the road from Whirlow to Fox House, and in the Woodseats area when the city boundary was extended in 1934.

Pressure on Derbyshire resulted that by 1932 in the northern part of the county all pump and oil boxes at filling stations had been painted green, and in many cases adverts removed.

You can see their point. This one was near Bakewell.

The Banner Cross one is the proposed development site. It's been a Texaco for very many years though.
