This video (3 parts) was shot by a German TV company 1966, mainly of and in the Dial House Club.

Does anybody recognise anybody, what about the acts.

Thanks to Ukelele Lady for the DVD and the Royal Mail for their pricing structure biggrin.gif

This film has generated more news in the Sheffield Star again.

In last nights Sheffield Star there were two full pages about the

Dial House Club and it's members , stewards and not forgetting

the " turns ".

Founded by Charles Goodison and 25 friends , it also mentions

" Alfredo " who played the lap steel guitar . I thought it was a Zither.

Since it's had two reports of it in the Star we have had more views of

this clip but although it's in the sixties, looking at the fashions and the

grimy streets of Sheffield you would think it was in the 40s

The Chap dressed as a cave man in part 3 was the drummer in his group ERIC WINSTONE & THE FLINTSTONES, I saw them a couple of times at the Arundel on City Rd.

I was interested in the views from behind the bar. They had a mix of hand-pull pumps and the perspex cube electric beer pumps, My dad had a career replacing the hand-pulls with electrics - "Mills Electric Beer Engines" were based in Stalker Lees Road, and had an office in Ecclesall Road opposite the Tesco, Since then someone else has had a career in replacing the electric pumps wih hand-pulls. You did get a FULL pint though with the electrics....

I remember the Mills beer cubes they were fitted in my dads pub the Rodley Inn.

As you say they did give you a full half pint. They relied on a rubber diaphragm in the cube, these often split causing spurious pump starts and miss measures.

I remember dismantling them for cleaning and diaphragm changing.

I came across your discussion about the film “Menschen in Sheffield” and the Dial House Club when googling a bit after finding the Starr articles on line. The reason for doing this in the first place is that we will be showing the film by Peter Nestler at the Showroom on Sunday 11 November 2012 at 3.30pm and Peter Nestler, the director of the film, will be there.

As you can see the title in English is “A Working Men’s Club in Sheffield” which is a direct translation of the German title that Peter Nestler chose: “Ein Arbeiterclub in Sheffield”. (The TV station who commissioned the film changed the title to “Menschen in….” without asking Nestler. They probably didn’t like the reference to “work”. I know a forum is not for advertising but when I saw your entries, I thought you might just like to know and tell other people who are interested. I am organising a whole retrospective of the Peter Nestler’s work and I met him last year in Brussels ( He lives in Sweden now). He was very keen to come back to Sheffield to see the film screened here. The film is now also available on a DVD published by the British Film Institute called “Roll Out the Barrel”. Here is a link to the screening of the film in Sheffield http://www.showroomworkstation.org.uk/workingmensclubinsheffield. The films is also shown in London on 9 Novemberat 7pm at the Goethe-Institut http://www.goethe.de/ins/gb/lon/ver/en9698086v.htm.

I hope some of you see this and get a chance to come. The film will be subtitled in English. Also, if you know anyone who may have been in the film or knows someone, let me know.

The original Youtube videos in the first post have vanished, so instead here is the whole film, almost 40 minutes long. Not a particularly good quality transfer, but better than nothing.
