Surgeon’s report Convict ship “Eden” bound for Tasmania (Van Diemens Land) 3rd August 1836 – 18th January 1837

The “Eden” convict ship having the Guards on board and the usual arrangements for receiving the prisoners being completed, left Deptford on Sunday 14th August 1836 and anchored off Woolwich shortly afterwards. On the following day 180 convicts, the number intended for immediate embarkation were examined on shore and as they were sent on board without any delay, we were enabled to get under weigh next morning and in compliance with our orders, proceeded to Portsmouth. The voyage to Portsmouth occupied five or six days for the wind during that time was generally foul, nay, sometimes boisterous and as it occasioned an unpleasant motion of the ship, almost all the prisoners in consequence suffered very much from sea sickness. On 22nd August we received 100 convicts from the hulks in Portsmouth Harbour, middle aged and militia men, many of them soldiers and this completed our stipulated number of 280. Having received the Government dispatch on 30th August we endeavoured to get to sea but did not succeed until next day: perhaps it would have been better had we remained at Spithead for more favourable weather, for we had a foul wind with a head sea until we got as far as Scilly, when part of the stern of the ship having been carried away by heavy pitching, we were obliged to bear up for Plymouth Harbour. In this short cruise the prisoners again suffered much from sea sickness and I have been thus particular in pointing it out, because I am satisfied the seeds of future discord were sown here; and that the debility underwent by the continuance of so depressing an affliction underscored in no small degree the predisposition to scurvy arising from other causes. My experience in the Convict Service has verified the above observation, for in two voyages we started with a fair wind and got away to the southward without encountering any bad weather and in neither ship had I a patient whom it was necessary to confine to bed. In my first and fourth voyages however, it was very different – we had foul winds and bad weather for some time after leaving port, and in both ships scurvy was very prevalent and made its appearance at an early period. In the present ship, the “Eden”, the disease commenced shortly after we had passed the Equator and became so general the prisoners (although not in an aggravated form), that I considered it absolutely necessary to go into Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope for the purpose of obtaining fresh beef and vegetables. Our stay in harbour was necessarily short but its beneficial effects were sufficiently obvious and exceeded the most sanguine expectations; the countenance which before was pale, sallow and dejected now became clear, the cheeks assumed a healthy bloom, the appetite returned and cheerfulness pervaded every part of the ship; in short, after remaining in harbour a couple of days, the altered appearance of the convicts was so congenial and satisfactory that I agreed to take on board 22 additional convicts. On leaving the Cape we were supplied with 2 live bullocks; a certain number of sheep and a suitable allowance of vegetables; and although scurvy again made its appearance before we reached Van Diemens Land, its character was mitigated and I am happy to say we had no patient during the remainder of the voyage whom it was necessary to confine to bed. We anchored at Hobart Town on 21st December 1836 and landed at that port and at Sydney 299 prisoners. We lost 3 men on the voyage altogether. The first died of fever near Madeira; the second in a fit of despondency and without any previous illness, strangled himself and the third sunk under a complication of phithisis and scurvy near the Cape of Good Hope. The measures I adopted for preserving the health and promoting the comfort of the people entrusted to my charge may be specified in a few words; the prisoners were washed only once or twice during the voyage, but they were kept very clean dry hally stoning the decks and using occasionally the scuppers. I allowed no foul or damp cloths between decks; had windsails constantly in the hatchways for purposes of ventilation; and in moist and cold weather clean burning stoves were placed for a short time in the prisons. My orders respecting personal cleanliness were pre emptory and although a certain number only in rotation could bathe in the tub, yet all men were required to appear every morning with clean hands and faces and every Sunday they were mustered for church with a clean shirt at least. Lastly I encouraged every kind of innocent amusement and recreation; and the singing and dancing which we had every evening when the weather permitted had (I am confident) a salutary tendency not only as a physical, but moral prophylactic. HMS Euryalus (1803)

After her return to England she was converted to a prison hulk. From 1825 to at least 1843, she was a prison for boys, the youngest being nine years old.

In 1847 Euryalus was moved to Gibraltar. In 1859 she was renamed Africa but was sold to a Mr. Recanno for breaking up in 1860.

Wiki

==============================

On 26 July 1826, the Reverend Price submitted his first Report, after taking over as Chaplain on the Euryalus.

'In consequence of my removal from the Retribution, Adult Convict Ship, at Sheerness, to the Euryalus of this place, my services are transferred to the exclusive charge of Juvenile Convicts.

Upon entering this new scene of labour, it was represented to me, that whatever might be effected with adult Prisoners, yet such was the depravity of the Boys, that every attempt to moralize them would only terminate in disappointment.

I found much reason for the remark. My confidence, however, was not to be overcome, and the last six months attention to them has fully convinced me, that by the removal of some impediments great good might here also be effected.

It must be borne in remembrance, that these poor children are taken out of our streets, not only deplorably ignorant of all religious knowledge, but with habits opposed to every moral and social restraint; and nothing can operate so sufficiently as an auxiliary to my instructions in correcting this evil, as a careful separation, and the adoption of an effective classification, which, I lament to state, cannot possibly be accomplished, on account of the inadequate size of the ship for so great a number of delinquents.

There can be no question but that this branch of the Convict Department is of paramount importance, as the hopes of the future generation depend upon the care and culture of the present.'

In the same Report, dated 26 July 1826, John Henry Capper said, 'The Boys confined in the Euryalus Hulk at Chatham have been employed on board in making clothing and other articles for the Service. Scurvy and Opthalmia prevailed among them for a short time. But both of those disorders have been subdued.'

The following January Capper reported that there has been some trouble from the boys of the Euryalus and put it down to the size of the ship. 'The Boys confined in the Euryalus Hulk have, upon two or three occasions, been refractory, and committed outrages on the persons of some of the Officers. The Ship in which they are confined is found too small to effect a proper classification, - a measure which is absolutely required for keeping them in a proper state of discipline.

Perhaps you could answer this email query, was he convicted at York or Sheffield

Hi There, I am trying to determine if my ancestor Charles Anderton (see attached and below) was in fact this convict. One issue I have come accross - his Death Certificate says he was born in Dublin, yet he was supposedly convicted at York. However on your web site (http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=9543) have this entry: 340 names of people convicted at Sheffield; not known to be Sheffielders.

Charles Anderton abt 1813 1832 Justitia 1832

1. Do you mean that the Charles was not a local - is it possible he originally came from Dublin? 2. I also don't know the UK so well - are York and and Sheffield connected places? Is this the same man - was he held on Justitia, before being offloaded to the Altas and transported to Tasmania - or are these two different people? Title: Charles Anderton, one of 200 convicts transported on the Atlas, 27 April 1833.

Details: Sentence details: Convicted at York (West Riding) Quarter Session for a term of 7 years on 24 October 1832.

Vessel: Atlas.

Date of Departure: 27 April 1833.

Place of Arrival: Van Diemen's Land. regards John McKee

Otter than saying people from Sheffield were committed for trail at York and Wakefield, I'm afraid I've currently nothing to add to the information posted. Any thoughts anyone please ?

More Info from John McKee by email

Hi There,

The document is a resource from Ancestory.com. In the supporting text it says: Location of Trial: Yorkshire - West Riding, England I attach perhaps a better copy - Charles Anderton 1.jpg I also found another resource which I think agrees with the information you sent to me. Entry number 6106 - Charles Anderton, 19, Theft of Geese and 3 Tame Rabbits, Sheffield Sessions, 7 years - see - Charles Anderton 2.jpg The supporting transcript for the document states:

Name: Charles Anderton

Age: 19

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1813

Date Received: 12 Nov 1832

Ship: Justitia

Place Moored: Woolwich

Date Convicted: 24 Oct 1832

Place Convicted: Sheffield So all this ties up with the conduct record I have for Charles from the Archives Office of Tasmania - can also be retrieved on-line at: http://portal.archiv...&type=C&id=1061 Meaning this person after originally being held on the hulk Justitia, was transported to Tasmania on the Atlas - Age 21 on arrival 24 Aug 1833.

My dilemma is this:

1. My Ancestor Charles Anderton died aged 69 - on 21st May 1879. That means his estimated year of birth is 1810, and his death certificate suggests he was born in Dublin.

2. The convict Charles Anderton's estimated year of birth is 1812 or 1813. So some people might say it is unlikely to be the same person - but on the other hand:

3. The convict Anderton was sentenced to 7 years - and the last record in his conduct log shows he moved to the Launceston area. I guess he completed his time October 1839.

4. We have only one record of a Charles Anderton leaving Tasmania around those years - 13 December 1843, leaving for Melbourne (Port Phillip) on The Tamar. There are no records of another Charles Anderton arriving in Tasmania from another port. Also no records of a Charles Anderton dying in Tasmania.

5. I also have confirmed the arrival of a William Anderton (a transcription errror, or a name change to cover his past?) on the Tamar from Launceston in Melbourne 6 days later (a small coastal trader - only 7 people disembarked, before it returned to Tasmania).

6. My Ancestor Charles married Mary Corcoran in Melbourne some 6 months later in May 1844.

You advice on how we might establish if the convict of your hulk, transported to Tasmania, and my ancestor are the same chap would be greatly appreciated. Do you know how I might obtain more detailed records of his trial?

Where I might find out more about his date and place of birth? The fact that he is a described as non Sheffield person, could that mean he was born in Ireland?

Hello Marcelle

I had a look and failed miserably on Ancestry. Nothing found using the name and nothing found under vessel for "America".

Just to confuse things

Mary PASHLEY was born in Ireland I am presuming, as she was transported from County Downs via the vessel "America" departing 06 Jan 1831 and arriving at Hobart Town 09 May 1831 with 186 landed female convicts.

Mary PASHLEY

married 12 Jan 1834, somewhere in Tasmania to

Charles HOWES

b:30 Mar 1799 Banham, Eng.

d:09 Jan 1876 Ballarat, Vic

At some stage during Mary's marriage she was admitted to New Norfolk Lunatic Aslyum and Mary died at New Norfolk.

Your site states he was aboard the vessel Retribution whereas the official Queensland site shows him as being aboard The England.

Who is right?

He was transported for seven (7) years but nothing is known about him other than being transported. The Australian records tend to suggest he must have arrived in Australia.

Did he die on route to Australia, or was he released after seven years or less?

There are apparently no records in Australia for a Matthew Gunson of his age that give any further information.

http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/gunson/matthew/115992

and this gives date and the name of the vessel as England. Details at this site are:

Australian Joint Copying Project. Microfilm Roll 89, Class and Piece Number HO11/8, Page Number 298

This record is one of the entries in the British convict transportation registers 1787-1867 database compiled by State Library of Queensland from British Home Office (HO) records which are available on microfilm as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project.

Any further information welcome, but at the moment what we have is incomplete and it seems contradictory. He would still have been in his early 20s on release.

Regards,

Alan Gunson
