1847 Pubs

Recommended Posts

This has taken a fair bit of work to get done, so, here is the description of what this work is (and indeed is not).

There are 408 known Publicans, listed alphabetically by the name of the premises.

If no keeper is known for a particular Pub, in 1847, it is not on this listing. This does not mean the place did not exist, only that a keepers name is not, currently known for 1847.

Addresses are provided (to the best of our ability), however, please bear in mind Street names change over the years and some addresses will reflect this.

Some modern Pub names will be included, we're not suggesting Fagans was open in 1847, but the Barrel was.

If a Pub is listed as "Still open" and you know it is now closed, please let us know.

Please reply if you notice any errors/duplicates - this is an ongoing work; constructive criticism and further evidence are always welcome.

An opening year has been provided in most cases, if you know better, or can fill in any missing opening years that would be appreciated. (There is an ongoing project to get best estimates in for all Pubs).

I hope you enjoy this.

Thanks for the list. It has answered one of my questions. My G grandfather is shown as living at 34 Bramall Lane (viz next to the pub) in the 1901 census.

Thing is Picture Sheffield http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s13701&action=zoom&pos=1&id=16559&continueUrl=

Shows the block, QA at 32 W.F. Caudle, Upholsterer, No 38, no 34.

I wondered if the pub was built later than 1901, apparently not so. Maybe it was rebuilt and extended.

I'm unsure if this is a live post or not.   My Great Great George Henry Malkin (always known as Henry) was licencee of the pub called Fortunes of War on Scotland Street.  30/11/1914 my GGF, William Hibberson, was courting Lilian.  Attached a postcard.
