Guest Unitedite
In 1966, British Transport Films produced a short [30 minute or so] documentary film, titled "Freight and a City". Directed by the talented and legendary, Edgar Anstey, the film documents the modernisation of British Railway's freight handling facilities in the City of Sheffield. Starting with contemporary footage of the, then, still operating, but now, long lost Wicker and Broad Street and other Goods Depots, the film then goes onto document the development of the then, brand new, but now also, long lost, Grimesthorpe Freight Terminal and Tinsley Marshalling Yards. The film's documentation of the operations of the hydraulic wagon lift at the former, L+NWR Broad Street Goods Depot, that brought freight vehicles from two storeys or so, down to ground floor level is fascinating in itself. All of the British Transport Films can still be obtained from the British Film Institute [bFI], either, as a boxed set of 9 DVD's, or singly. The film, Freight and a City is available on the DVD "Reshaping Britain's Railways", which I seem to think is Volume Four.

Guest Unitedite
Is this the one? British Transport Films, Volume 4: Reshaping British Railways. filmstore.bfi.org.uk Steve, This is the one that you would be looking for if you wanted to purchase the film. The cassette should contain two discs, each containing roughly 6 short films each. All of the films will relate to railway operations in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. I too, was fortunate enough to be given the boxed set. I find these short films provide a most fascinating insight on post war, railway operations and also, on the social fabric of Britain itself. Kind regards; N
