Sweet Shop Off Abbey Lane.

Recommended Posts

I lived on Abbey Lane until 1968 when I was 5 and remember being taken to a sweet shop at the Chesterfield Rd end of Abbey Lane.It may have been as far as where The KFC is now.I can't find any photos of this anywhere;it's been bugging me for years.Anyone help please?

I'm pretty sure that my sister in law's parents owned that shop. It was on the right hand side opposite the Big Tree pub, if that's the one you're thinking about. I'll ask her if she's any photo's next time I see her.

from Kelly's directory 1965.

The Jewellers is number 24,

I'm confused now <_< Their name was Howard and I'm sure the shop was next to a chip shop, somewhere near the Big Tree. Haven't been able to ask my sister in law yet, but it's intriguing me now.

If memory serves, during the 50's this shop had all kinds of mobile displays in the window, mainly consisting of steel balls, lifted by motors and pulleys running around on wire tracks, very elaborate and fascinating.

Just to clarify the situation the corner shop asit was then was the coblers the sweet shop was the middle one I cant remember what the one furthest away from the camera was , the sweet shop lasted till probably the early 90s and then was knocked through and became a general food shop - open all hours.

I know the mind plays tricks and its over 40 years ago but I'm 99% certain the sweet shop was on a corner.I remember the Walls ice cream sign on the pavement.
