Guest Yorklancs
I noted with interest the photos of the tablets in the City Hall for those Sheffielders who volunteered to serve in the Boer War. Many Towns issued their own privately produced medals. Others gave their volunteers Illuminated scrolls or inscribed pocket watches etc. Apart from having their names on the tablet in the Town Hall were the Sheffield volunteers given any other token of their city's appreciation. i would be very grateful if anyone can tell me anything on this subject please Many thanks Andrew Grantham
Guest SheffieldArchives
Hello Andrew Thre are certainly reminders of the Boer War(s) around Sheffield: the memorial to the York and Lancaster Regiment‘s Boer War service at Weston Park, 'Ladysmith' Avenue at Nether Edge, 'Mafeking' Place at Chapeltown and the grave of Sergeant James Firth (awarded the Victoria Cross) at Burngreave Cemetery etc. Have a look at our Research Guide on Sheffield's involvement in the Boer Wars: Research Guide: Boer Wars A delve into some of these sources might answer your question. Best wishes, Cheryl
