madannie77
Robert Bennett (father of Sir William Sterndale Bennett) - Conductor of a select Glee and Madrigal Society meeting at the Yellow Lion, in the Haymarket (1817). Glee and Madrigal Society ? 1817 predates our earliest known keeper by five years. According to my concise Oxford dictionary, a glee is a song for three or more voices singing different parts simultaneously, usually unaccompanied. Robert Bennett was a chorister at Kings College Cambridge and became organist at Sheffield Parish Church in 1811, which is how it came to be that his only son William Sterndale was born in Sheffield, although William left Sheffield to live with his grandparents in 1820 following the death of his mother.
